For many years I have subscribed to that very good tip, Elinor. I hope Harry did this, it will make his life easier!
However it only works if the bonnet/hood is either coming off for the first time, or has been carefully refitted in the past. Mine has slightly uneven gaps either side that I'd like to fix, which I presume to be a legacy of the 2001 rebuild. I therefore need to purposely reposition the hinges, and that will involve some trial and error. It's so easy to lock yourself out in the process though, and poking a rod through the "escape" holes underneath the front wings does not guarantee the catches will release!
A little morphing is OK, Tony, unless it happens deep in a technical discussion of some sort which this was not. I've learned some most interesting and important things in drifting threads.
As I said to Clarke, we're all a bit bored in here and just visiting anyway.

I agree, could be the way to go. I think many of us enjoy developing broader conversation, and it's fun! I often learn things on the side from tangents that develop within technical threads, although I respect that they are intended to, and should, maintain relevance to the original post

Nix and I are off to town again today, Wednesday, as usual. It's quite Marvelous to just get in, turn the key, and know I have the most dependable ride on the place! (My work truck doesn't count, as I leave it parked in town)
Wart (2001 Windstar) is getting sort of tired and it shows in his dropping fuel economy. In 2009 when we first got him he was making 22mpg, now he's dropped to 18. Nix gets a good solid 20!
Perhaps Wart is a bit envious of the attention Nix gets and would like some as well.
Little things go a long way. Oil and filter change. clean or replace the air filter. And, even a new set of spark plugs????
I almost took the Jeep on errands. It was coldish. And, the jeep ahs a great heating system.
But, I took the Jaguar. It took some knob exercise to get the warm air coming in to the cabin. But, then it did as well as ever or even better. The auto function on the fan control even modulated!!!
Do they sense things? Seems so.
Tight parking at the markets, but folks seemed to be careful of errant door swings.
Including a huge Lincoln Navigator SUV. Driven by a very petite gal????
Wart's heater and AC do work just fine, but like the rest of him, they have no personality; no soul.
It's sort of like when you put bread in the toaster and it pops up just fine, perfectly brown, just as you want it. So What?! Do you polish the toaster and praise its performance? No! It's Just A Toaster! You keep it reasonably clean, but that's it! You don't leave the kitchen, looking back appreciatively at the toaster.
That's like Wart. He has no personality; no soul. Even little things we have to jiggle to make work are annoyances not personality.
All his reliability doesn't make up for the dull roar inside, his lack of style and comfort; the ease with which he disappears into the mediocrity of modern automobilia where instead of chrome, wood and leather, one is surrounded by expanses of colored plastic, once covered in places with chrome tape that fell off years ago.
Will anyone in years to come, wax nostalgic about that colored plastic interior they once had in that noisy gray van like they might over the burl walnut instrument panel, those quaint round gauges, the leather seats, the plush pile carpets, silence on the road, the comfort of driving long distances, the feeling of being surrounded by Safety and immersed in Luxury, in that old Jaguar they once owned and loved, but the family outgrew it and now they regret selling?
Quite loquacious !!! Toaster analogy is a bit classic. True, no question about it.
But, function is the role of each. Unappreciated they fail to work. Definitely missed, then. I usually have two slices of a multi grained bread with nuts toasted in a very mundane toaster. Shiny chrome at that... Well, I got a loaf of a multigrain bread at another market. Just not right, even toasted. Ugh.
Now, there was a life before toasters and sliced bread!!! Cut it and put the slices in a hot buttered iron skillet. I still do that once in a while.
Wart does a have a function, much like my Jeep. Cargo!!! A bit fussy to retract the rear seats, but, once done, a nice cavern!!!
Chrome tape, ugh. My 79 IHC Scout II was a tough critter. But, a cheesy cheap interior. Engine turned chrome tape trim on the dash. Fake as fake can be. I peeled it off and painted that section matte black to contrast with the other part in glossy black. Simple, but much more dignity.
It's horrible front bench seat came out in favor of a pair of buckets from a Chrysler
Cordoba. Montalban knew comfort.
So, give Wart a break, he serves you as needed.
My dad was a professional soldier. Early in his career, horses and mules were the mode of transport. Classy cavalry horses homely mules. Mules were much smarter and capable of more than a "pretty" horse. His favorites were "Star gazer and Joe". Joe known for exemplary stubbornness. At ties, he called me "Joe". Do I wonder why?
