. Although originally approved by the SCCA, they succumbed to pressure from other teams, McLaren in particular, who argued that the fans constituted "movable aerodynamic devices", outlawed by the international sanctioning body, the FIA, a rule first applied against the 2E's adjustable wing. There were also complaints from other drivers saying that whenever they drove behind it the fans would throw stones at their cars. McLaren argued that if the 2J were not outlawed, it would likely kill the Can-Am series by totally dominating it — ironically, something McLaren had been doing since 1967.[5] A similar suction fan was used in Formula One eight years later on the Brabham BT46B, which won the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix, but Brabham reverted to the non-fan BT46 soon afterwards due to complaints from other teams that the car violated the rules. The car was found to be within technical specifications allowing the victory to remain.
I only attended one Can Am race held at MIS, think it was 1970. My main memory is that my ears rang for two days after.

it took 35/40 years before any one could make a BB Chevy stay together with serious turbocharging, today those old fashioned design BB are makin 2500/3000HP, (but not much is factory stock in them also).

And what a topic, too. You own a beautiful automobile. My first Jag was an XJ12C. Bright red with the black vinyl roof. Absolute fantastic machine. Made the mistake of selling it when we moved out of Colorado. The gentleman that owns it now is doing a complete ground up restoration. My wife still chuckles when she thinks about the line in the manual about keeping the fuel tanks balanced when traveling at speed.....

right about the two fuel tanks, i learned the hard way , fill both full up, and then parked it overnight on a hill side, it dripped gas all night from the low side!
good thing nobody was smoking around it!!LOL

Always been a fan of old time Can AM racing. I was 22 in 1966 and an avid fan of these cars / races. I remember the Hap Sharp comment (the other guy who was on the team with Jim Hall and drove these cars as well) complaining about how much heavier the car would be if they repainted the cars before the big race as was the plan. I believe the 2 speed auto was from a Corvair. I guess with heavy duty parts - just guessing. I was lucky enough to be camped near by the pits at Mt. Tremblant St. Jovite in Quebec. During the Can Am races that year. Very exciting times Big years for Ford Cobras and the Shelby Mustangs Mark Donahue with Camaro Z 28 cars
Here are some pics I had on my hard drive somewhere. Couple of good links.

only pic i have of one of the great cars, JIM Hall 1966, and his SUCKER car, they banned it right away, when he was 1/2 track ahead of other cars in just one lap!
used 2 small blower motors a suck air out from under the car, pulled the car down to the track surface, way more traction and grip in corners or straights.
he also had the movable wing connected to the gas pedal, pedal down wing flat, off the pedal wing up and applying more downforce to the axle housing uprights!
guess he was a little ahead of the times and other racers, i call it out of the BOX thinking.

that is actually not the sucker car (2j) pictured in either photo.

Eureka!!!
I got my Harmon Kardon stereo and small amp to work on the XP
powered Dell my son gave me. USAF surplus!!! Yowee, awesome sounds.
1. I saw one of the tech's on the CAnAm car pass a hand over the vertical pipes. feeling for heat to denote all 8 firing, I think!!!
2. The big sound change from snap, crackle and pop at "idle" to the silk ripping shriek at speed. Fabulous.
In the early 70's son and I often went to a historic old race track at
Saugus, Ca. Wifey and daughter opted out??? Concrete and just short of a 1/4 mile. Only slightly banked. Two classes. Somewhat stock V8's
limited to just short of 400CI. Mostly mid 50's SBC's. One 60's Tbird.
I think it was just mounted on a 3/4 ton chassis. Hugely heavy, but almost capable and sounded great. The fastest and loudest was a 60's mopar sans top. Real thunder as a pack of V8's charged down the straight at WOT!!!
The other class was for 6 cylinder cars. CI limited to just under 300.
Again more mid 50's Chev's, but, one or two Fords. One of the fords was suspiciously fast. Great noise as they screamed down the straights. But, much different sound. Son coined an apt description,
"Mad bees".
Track now closed. Houses came,. fussed... Gee. Buy a house use by a race track, what do you expect????
Carl

the diesel car would blow past PENSKE factory Porsche cars on the main straight like they were standing still, he promptly had them banned.
Porsche engines were screamin at 10,000 revs, Audi diesel was revin 4500/5000 rpm,and quiet to boot.
quite a sight to see!
since then FIA and other organizations have regulated them out of contention, to many restrictions, and strangled the potential of a diesel for racing purposes!
like Can-Am they have faded away.
