Default Window switch wiring diagram problem

Can someone PLEASE help me decipher the window switch diagram for my 76 XJ12?!?

I put in a different console cover, and THOUGHT I had done all the wires properly (I left the old switches plugged in until I was ready to swap them, then pulled one wire, put it where it belonged, then went to the next wire, and so on), but apparently something went wrong. I looked at my wiring diagram in my Haynes manual, but the colors seem all wrong (unless I'm just not looking at the right wires). PLUS, they don't show which wire goes on which plug, necessarily...it just shows which wires goes to which switch.

HELP ME!!!!!!!!!! None of the switches work. Every so often, I hear a click under the dash, and can roll the driver's front window down, but then the click happens again, and the window won't work.

OK. Here are the pictures of the mess of window switches and wires on my 76 XJ12.

In the first picture (100_5802):

215 - Main switch (lock-out switch)
216 - passenger side window switch
218 - driver's side window switch
217 (left) - front switch for rear driver's side window
219 (left) - front switch for rear passenger side window
217 (right) - rear switch for rear driver's side window
219 (right) - rear switch for rear passenger's side window
220 - window motors

Second picture (100_5798): what the back of the switches actually look like. Notice that NONE of the plug things line up like in the wiring diagram.

Third picture (100_5797): the back of the window switch panel between the front seats. Notice that NONE of the wires are perfectly straight, nor do they line up like in the diagram...lol.

trying to do this with a 74 XJ6 at the moment,
spaghetti mess of candy colours, not even sure they are working at all.
wondered if the small central window lock rocker (which is my case is broken) might be essential to the rest of them running, like do they daisy chain at all or might the central lock have locked them before it broke hence they dont operate.
is there a published list of which colours go where and why?

If you're unsure of the center switch (which is indeed necessary for all else to work), merely connect both wires together behind the console. That switch only closes a circuit to make the windows work. I put a jumper in my wires and repurposed the switch for another task.

Look at this thread, reply #60:

There you will find color maps of Series 2 window switches, all except the back seat switches.

I hope this is of assistance to you.
