dont want to get anyones hopes up but i may have found the solution to the age old jaguar problem of rust appearing around the winscreen rubbers.
after repairing and repainting (properly) around the window apertures on the series 3 for the second time in 6 years i decided to look at the cause of the corrosion. it appears as though water runs off the roof and the window rubbers allow a certain amount to seep under them and collect in the valley at each corner allowing the area to be constantly damp and rot to set in. with our climate tiny bubbles usually appeared within 8 -12 months.
after removing the screens cutting, treating, painting the steel refitting the screens etc etc as previously done twice before, this time i did not fit the outer rubber strip on the car. instead the area was masked carefully leaving a thin strip uniformly around the screen into which a high quality black polyurethane sealer was pumped right down into the valley until it was proud of the tape, then before it set was smoothed down flush with the body. the tape was removed later when sealer was 75% set and a nice clean bonded rubber seal was left that replaces the old rubber which to all but the very purist of car nuts looks a factory job. water can physically not get to the vulnerable area and languish.
this was done over two years ago and there is no sign of any corrosion returning whatsoever no matter how close i check. i wanted to wait as long as i could before posting the results to make sure it worked. hope this helps somebody. jj.
