I picked up a 1990 xj12. Not shure why the 88-92 series three xj12's are not included in this forum. And I did'nt see anouther spot to post so here I am. I have long dreamed of owning a series one XJ6. But this Xj12 came along very cheap.
I need to either repair or replace my motor. And swapping in a running motor sounds easier to me. I was hoping to find out if series 1&2 v12's can be used without much fuss.
Also. I'm thinking about some performance mods. Does any one know of a manual steering rack that would fit a series 3? I would like to go manual steering with a large wood rim steering wheel.

An earlier V12 would bolt in Ok but you'd have to work out the details ....different F.I. system, different ignition system and probably a slew of other little things. Plus....anything prior to mid-77 had the Borg Warner trans instead of the TH400. I think you'd run into a bolt pattern issue. Plus plus....the early "pre-HE" engines sucked up even more gas the the one you've got.
I'd look for a correct mid-81 or newer HE V12, personally. Shouldn't be too hard to find as the XJSs had 'em...and even then the early 80s version had some minor differences.
Don't know where you'd find a non-power steering rack. The car would be a bear to drive even if you could.
You're posting in the right place. It's just that the section heading isn't quite accurate. It should say XJ6 1968-1987 and XJ12 1972-1992
Cheers

Hey thanks for the info.
I guess I'll try to narrow my search to as close to 1990 as possible. I'm just off on vacation now. Sometime in December I hope to pull the motor and spread it out across the garage floor and see whats let of the one I have. Also I have a friend with an auto wrecking business. Maybe he can help me find motor with the networking system they have.
Yes I imagine if the gear ratio on the manual steering was not right it would be a handfull. But for example I once had an old two ton Ford truck with manual steering and it was easy enough to drive. I was just looking to reduce weight and transfer more power to the rear wheels.
