Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum and I have just purchased an XJ12 Sovereign from 1984.
I would like to find an original car radio as well as an on-board telephone and the telephone antenna because it was equipped with one.
But I realize that it's quite complicated.
Would anyone have any information to give me please
Thank you in advance for your help
PS: Please forgive me if there are any mistakes because I am writing to the translator
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new Jaguar. We'd love to see some photos. The particular radio that came with your car originally might depend on what market it was sold in. Do you have a driver's manual or instructions that may have come with the car that shows a picture of the original radio? Forum member @sov211 is an authority on the Series 3 cars with V12 engines so he might be able to help.
You might also look at page 8 of this service bulletin for some information on which radio came with which model years, depending on the market. Once you find the correct model number, ebay might be the first place to start looking for one. You might have to find a non-working unit and then find a specialist to refurbish it.
The phone and antenna may be harder to find. I'm guessing here, but some of those were probably aftermarket.
I don’t believe “factory phones” were an option, at least not in Canada.
Just a word of caution, if you do find a radio make sure it comes with its four digit security code as finding it even with serial numbers is getting well nigh impossible (and are dividing to the radio, not the car).
Note also that the radios from a similar vintage Jaguar XJS are fully interchangeable although the faceplate might be a bit different.
^^
It’s easy to simply add a photo or photos to your posts by selecting the “Manage Attachments” link in the “Current Attachments” box below the text entry box you’ve been typing in.
Here is the link to the service bulletin, I forgot to include it. The forum may not let you post a photo until you reach a certain number of posts, I can't recall if that is the case.
The V12 Sovereign was not sold in Canada (the V12 car for Canada in the 80's was a Daimler Double Six with Jaguar badging and addition equipment for Canada). The V12 Sovereign was a UK/European model, and it is correct that the radio units provided in the XJ6/12 cars of the period varied according to market. Those fitted to the Canadian V12 cars were Alpine units and they changed from year to year as technology advanced. The European cars had entirely different audio units, some provided by Clarion. A radio fitted to a French or Belgian-market car, for example, could be quite different from the one supplied in a UK model.
Telephones: there were indeed factory-fitted telephone systems in the late Series III V12 cars. The phone itself sat in the console armrest and the padded armrest had an entirely different shape from that normally provided; it had a "cut-out" for the telephone itself so that the receiver could be accessed without lifting the cover.
This 1992 V12 Vanden Plas, #06 of the last 100 built, had exactly that telephone unit and armrest cover:
In this photo you can see the original telephone aerial on the rear screen:
.I regret that I do not have a photo of the phone installation nor of the armrest cover - but the phone system was indeed a genuine option.
@Noah@sov211 Merci beaucoup pour ces informations.
Je vais continuer les recherches
Je suis preneur de toutes informations possible car cela ne va pas être facile
My UK spec 86/87 Daimler Double Six had its original Clarion (I think) radio-cassette when I bought it 30 years ago. It didn't have any codes. It suffered a lot from interference and I replaced it with a Sony radio-CD.
@Peter3442 J’ai trouvé cet autoradio.
Selon ce que j’ai pu trouver comme informations ce serait ce type d’autoradio qui était monté sur ma voiture par rapport à l’année et aux remplacements de références des bulletins de service de Jaguar
En espérant qu’il va bien fonctionner
