I have 1975 xj12c.
I am repairing my jaguar and i need parts for my engine rebuilding.
so i searched and i found the engine number starts with 7P(5.3 litre engines 7P_ _ _ _ _ then finished with 2 letters such as SA, SB, LA) but mine is 8S_ _ _ _ _ SA.
History was 2 owner car. the second owner said it is original engine. but why is the engine number diffrent?
Is my engine original?

My chart from a very long time ago:
7P1001 to 7P3999 S1 carby V12
7P4000 to 7P25000 S2 carby V12
7P25001 to 7P42299 S2 EFI V12
7P43000 to 7P45000 S3 PreHE V12
7P45002 to ????? S3 HE V12
8S1001 to 8S18000 XJ-S PreHE.
8S18001 to 8S???? XJ-S HE
The "S" is for standard comp/ PreHE 9:1, HE 12.5:1 (USA 11.5:1)
The "A" is the piston/liner grade.
There is a "B", and there are a millions of ideas for that.
My take is that (as told when working for Jaguar) when the factory made a blunder, as they do, with the liners, they were merely honed a little more to "clean up", as apposed to scrapping them ($$$ involved) and thus the "B" designation. This honing was no more than 0.0015".
My HE was an "SB" engine.
