Hello Boffins,
I am making initial enquiries to buy an XJ6 circa 1975. The seller informs me that the car has been parked for nearly a year and when he took it for a ride recently the (automatic) gears were not engaging correctly. He says that this did not happen when the vehicle was parked off a year ago. Could this problem merely require the transmission oil to be drained and filled up again or is it indicative of something more serious? Ta chaps.

Check the fluid level first, warm, in park on level ground with the engine running.
Check the vacuum line to the modulator. The transmission uses a vacuum signal to determine load and if the line is perished it wont get a proper signal and will shift late or not at all.
Boffins...haha... I had to google that one.
