XJ6 Fuel Tank Corrosion - Good News for a change
When I first got this car, it had a clogged fuel filter. I didnt read to much into it but was aware of the rotting fuel tank issue in our cars. During a long road trip last year I had some minor fuel feed issues and replaced the filter again, cleaned out the carb and added an insurance filter at the carb inlet. However, prior to that I had let a tank run dry and wasnt sure how much the gathered crud was sucked in then or if I had the typical tank problem.
While doing an oil change today for an upcoming trip, I had the opportunity to change out the filter after 10,000 kms of normal use. I performed open heart surgery on the filter to see what I had collected (pic below). Happily it looked good , just a small amount of fine sediment. Seeing its so easy I will probably just keep changing it every second oil change now. Another piece in a long string of good luck have had with this car.

Lucky I found the car
Lucky the initial repairs where relatively simple
Lucky when my heater core broke the coolant flowed neatly out the drains, not to the interior
Lucky the few times Ive had issues I have been in my or someone else garage
Lucky my auto trans fail to proceed ended up being a simple fix
Lucky I found JF, a wealth of knowledge and a new social group on the runs
Lucky my fuel issues were just self inflicted rather than advanced tank decay
So now I plan to load the car on an overnight ferry , twice, for a run in another State. Really, what could possibly go wrong?
There, that should buy me a world of grief :-) its just a matter of time before its my turn

It doesnt worry me to much but this is about the smallest boat my wife will get on. Hopefully a smooth crossing and a happy start to the holiday. We scored a smooth trip across Cook Strait last time in NZ, hopefully we will get more of the same.
She is a bit leary , a few decades ago we did the same trip and had an engine failure on the boat mid journey. We wallowed around for a couple of hours in the dark, until they got it going again. Was not a happy camper.
