One of my key questions is can it be installed by one person or do you need two people to hold the lid while another bolts things up? When I reinstalled my hood I had to round up some neighborhood teenagers to help me.

My springs were tired. I could open the lid and it would stay there until a breeze came along and then it would slowly sink down. The gas strut I used has only 10 lbs of pressure. It doesn't open or even help to open the lid. Just enough to hold it open.

A question for our British fiends: a bonnet is the big piece of sheet metal that covers the engine bay (like an American hood). But the boot is the cavity in back where you put things, right? Is the part we are talking about called the "boot lid"? Americans would call it the trunk lid.
You are absolutely correct.

Benefits:
1) 45 minutes to install
2) Completely reversible
3) Securely holds the boot-lid open at 71 degrees, 30 degrees more than factory hinge.
4) Very easy to operate

The factory hinge design holds the Boot-Lid open at 30.5" measured from the Boot seal to the Boot-Lid edge. This new design holds the Boot-Lid open at 47" a 50% increase.

Factory Hinge assemblies with weak springs mobile welding atlanta, will get a reduced moment from the Boot-Lid being more vertical, hence the springs become more effective at holding the Boot-Lid open without a secondary prop.

The assembly consists of a new RH & LH hand Boot-Lid to Hinge Bracket attachment, that incorporates a secondary hinge feature. A new 5/16” hole will have to be drilled in each existing Hinge Arm (drilling template provided). A lever locking device is used to lock Hinge at New Angle or Factory Angle.

Current machining quote; (concept SS Hinge/Bracket) would produce a kit for both hinges (including new hardware) for ~$70, plus shipping.

Questions for XJ6 Owners?
1. Are there enough XJ6s Boot-Lid Hinges with weak springs?
2. Are there XJ6 Owners that would value more Boot-Lid head room?

……To justify machining 20 kits. Please way-in.with interest, desired features, ideas, concerns & etc.
If there is enough interest, I will make a prototype out of aluminum to test geometry details.

Thank you, Bill-Jose-Elinor, for illuminating the issue.

David

"Concept" Bracket Hinge combination +30 degrees
Currently rebuilding my 58 hinge towers and have one cleaned, painted and reassembled with new springs. To me, this is a dangerous and extremely difficult undertaking. Prior to starting, I found very little search info on this forum, NCRS archives and the C1 Servicing Guide. Would like to incorporate "How To Rebuild Hinge Towers" in my currently ongoing 58 Restoration Thread. Let me say that I personally would not recommend taking this task on unless I had weak or broken spring(s) or maybe I just didn't know the right "tricks or tips" to make it safer and easier to do. I am soliciting input right now and have the following questions:

Can you replace the springs without removing the towers from the car? If so, how in the world did you do it?
Anyone know the differences for 53-55 and 61-62 versus the 56-60?
Any pictures of special tools and/or jigs?

I can't believe it's been four years since I've installed these brackets. I have been SUPER HAPPY with them the whole time. I brag on David's invention all the time whenever I'm showing the car to an interested party. Which seems to be at least twice a week for years now. THANK YOU DAVID! Outstanding job!

+1!!!
The Only other "trunks" I have seen that open this wide are jelly bean cookie cutter cars with 18 inch trunk lids and Zero personality/soul.

Hello,
Even the lid on the XJ cars in Sweden attacks the owners when they want to use the trunk......
I have read the entire thread and I am impressed with the solution. However, not once is it mentioned where the lower bracket can be found or if there is a drawing with dimensions and measurements?
Or can I buy the bracket from you David?
Cheers, /Thomas

I really don't doubt it and as I wrote, I'm impressed with the solution David came up with. I would be happy to buy the bottom bracket if David has it for sale

Thomas,
All of the original kits have been sold, I use an online CAD machine shop, so was able to get price for today.

The production cost has about doubled; $146 to $296 for 4 kits. One kit would be $455 delivered international.

If there are 3 other Jaguar XJ6 owners that would sign up for the Trunk (Boot) hinge kit at $296 International delivered ($266 US domestic delivered), I would reorder the machined parts. The hardware parts are from the local hardware store.

When I did the Bonnet hold open stay, I had over 25 requests, so machining cost was more reasonable.

Hi David and thank you very much for your quick response.
I understand the situation and small production runs are always costly. Unfortunately there will be 10% duty and then 25% VAT on the total cost, including the duty amount... Sounds like I'll have to keep wrestling with the lid. Sad when there is a solution but please get back to me if there is any change and you order a larger series. Best regards and have a nice weekend! /Thomas

Thomas,
40 year old car and they still hassle you.
Can Duty and VAT be waived if it is labeled "medical equipment" to prevent head lacerations and back strain??
Will let you know if there are any meaningful changes...

I have one of David's original kits and it's one of the best features of the car. I'm putting golf bags in and out of the trunk all the time. And NEVER hit my head. Again, my thanks to David. A true ENGINEER!!

Thanks and it looks really good.
Unfortunately David, I don't think customs will agree that this would be medical equipment, they would probably just suggest that I buy a Volvo instead...... :-((((

Kind regards and happy Saturday! /Thomas

If you keep hitting your head on the trunk lid, it will require medical attention!

I did my part, I bought a 740 turbo Diesel in the 90's, 155,000 miles trouble free.

Before I got my kit from David, I had cut an old broom stick to 36 inches and painted it BLACK to keep the lid up.
If all else fails, you might try that.
