- A split flexible hose.
- past the seals in the rack

The high pressure side of the system is most velnerable, being the pipe from pump to rack - this will probably have a flexible hose somewhere, and the rack seals. When the rack seals leak the fluid first fills up the rubber bellows at each end of the rack before leaking out onto the road.

Of course the other, (return) pipes can leak especially if they are exposed to road salt and spray whcih causes them to corrode and leak

If you lost all the fluid, you should see a trail showing you exactly where the leak is. That's a lot of fluid to lose. It will leave signs.

I don't think these seals are all that hard to replace, but most people just fit a service exchange rack, as they are normally not all that expensive. Anyhow, if you do do it yourself, you will need to take the rack off. When you strip down, don't forget to check the inner ball joints which are hidden behind the rack bellows. The rack and pinion should be OK as the power assistance means it doesnt get much work through it.

Rebuilding the rack is not something your average DIY'er does on his own. In fact, most shops buy rebuilt racks rather than rebuilding them. We sell lots of rebuilt units.

Note, that there is a core charge. The item ships out at a higher price and the core is refunded once your old, rebuildable unit is received.
