XJ6 series1 from RHD to LHD and steering rack upgrade
Hello.
I have XJ6 Series1 1972 RHD. Here in Northern Europe we drive cars from left, so I am converting my RHD series1 to LHD. LHD dashboard panels I already ordered from United States. I have understood that most of the parts of steering mechanism can be just bolted to the other side of the car, but the steering rack is causing me gray hair.
Can the original series1 steering rack just be twisted 180 degrees to work with LHD steering? Or if I rebuilt it, can the long tower be mounted on the LHD side of the rack during that process? Or is the only way try to find LHD steering rack from somewhere? This last one seems to be most dificult of these options.
I have read that XJ6 and XJ12 Series1, 2, 3 and XJS steering racks are combatible between each other. Only minor modifications for the hydraulic lines and intermediate shaft is needed? They all bolt on straight to my Series1 subframe? If that is correct the best option for me would be to get that short tower XJS 1992-96 ZF aluminium shaft to get heavier steering. Then I have same questions about that ZF steering rack. Does the same ZF rack work in the LHD and RHD cars, or can RHD rack be rebuilt to work in the LHD side steering. Or are the aluminium castings of the ZF racks different between the RHD and LHD cars and only thing for me is to find LHD rack.
