This made me howl Doesn't sound like what you're doing is much of an improvement! Kudos for having the testicular fortitude to attempt it though - keep the pics coming. This is going to be one legendary XJS.
@89 Jacobra - is there a website with engine and engine bay dimensions? I've been entertaining the idea of an XJS lump, but with another V12.
I have not found a web site with any dimensions on engine bay sizes. Engine sizes I found in the images of a given motor. If you'd like I could take measurements of my 89's engine bay. As I pulled the block back out to work on the oil pan. I will tell you the 460 ford is every bit as wide as the v12, and when you put the headers on, it gets even wider. To the point I will have to cut some of the bracing from the firewall to the frame and add some bracing outward from the original location. Let me know what dimensions you need and I'll get the tape measure out.

im going to do my best to keep it stock looking, hopefully valve covers won't be coming up through the hood. If not, im possibly going to make my own hood from some sheet metal and ***** because i can't bring myself to chopsaw the nice hood that came with it.

I never found a website detailing engine "Bay" dimensions. The engines dimensions I got off the web under images, for a specific given motor, IE. 350 chevy etc. If you need the engine bay dimension on the XJS just say so, and I'll measure mine, as I pulled the block out to work on the oil pan. Let me know what dimensions you want and I'll break out the measuring tape.

Reason: need to delete as I basically duplicated it.

Thanks. I don't want to derail this thread, even though engine fitment is relevant...
I really wouldn't even know what to ask you to measure - maybe if other folks could use this basic knowledge we could start another thread?
like someone here has said, YANK the old engine out , and dangle the replacement engine in the engine bay, then sit down with a light and start making notes of what is in the way!
making note of your engine mounts, what ever else is in the way of setting it down!
then comes to your personal logic and your ablity.
remember anything can be done , with enough imagination!
If the oil pan and/or valve cover to hood clearance is an issue, couldn't you just dry sump it and kill 2 birds with one stone?
I believe it's still to tall from th lower edge of the block to the top of the valve cover, this is a really big 6 cyl engine. I'm thinking he ought to run no hood at all.

I don;t know weights or dimensions but, just at a glance, a Detroit Diesel V6 seems like it might fit better. There used to be a lot of pretty cheap ones out there, they were commonly used in buses and other industrial equipment. Not as modern as your Cummins though.
It's an interesting project, hope it works out for you!
You're right Daim - just looked up the sizes - length and width might work but height almost 4 feet and weight almost 2000 lbs I think rule that out as a simple drop in replacement. I never had a full side view of one before, doesn't look that big from the top. Of course being in a big machine probably makes the engine look smaller.
Im not sure if i said already, but i have to scrap the manual conversion due to the size of the manual transmission.
I may end up making a custom hood with a hood cowl to cover the valve covers. I can't bring myself to chop into the hood as is because it's in perfect condition :/
Hey Pud If it weren't for the fact you are in Jersey. I'd swap you for mine. it's black and has one or 2 small singe spots from the engine fire. It's really quite minor. I'm figuring to add some type of hood scoop to it anyway. So not to worried about cutting it up. Maybe a 71 Mustang Mach1 Style double scoop hood I'm thinking??? 89 Jacobra
Update! got the engine minorly disassembled, got all unnecessary parts removed.
Got the trans! got the starter/adapter/slip yoke/flywheel! once i get it running i'll just need a drive shaft and tires!!
Aww yiss!
And the KDP is still in the block. Gotta fix that. Then get 'er in the car.
imma make my own motor mounts. Im using the OEM v12 motor bushings due to beefiness but fabricating my own mounts as well.
Going to be the dopest jaguar in new jersey.
