I think I have pictures of the throttle wire positions, I will check later. I took a lot of pictures before I was confident enough to start taking things apart.

I wouldn't recommend staring it without coolant in the system; the temperature will go up very quickly with no coolant and you will damage the engine.
As far as I know the sensor just indicates the temperature (or level) and has no effect on the engine running.

ok I understand,I was just going to see if it will start and run for just a few seconds.the car has been sitting for about 5 years.I had to clean tank and put new pump on with filter.changed oil and replaced spark plugs, new oil and filter.if it will run.ill flush cooling sytem and replace thermostat.and add new coolant.I just didnt know if coolant sensor would keep it from starting with no coolant.

jagernut,
I did some looking at the car this evening, and I may be able to help with wires.
1. The two spade connector that you show I think goes to the microswitch (kickdown) on the throttle pod. If so, black wire goes toward firewall, white wire to front of engine side.
2. 3 bullet connector goes to cruise control pod directly behind a/c compressor.
3. 2 bullet connector with tan wires? . I have one in the wire loom connected to the rear air crossover pipe, and comes out of the loom around the left firewall corner of the fuel rail (approx.). It connects to another 2 bullet connector, but the other connector has 4 wires on it.
4. 2 bullet connector with tan wire. No clue. Mine looks like it got caught in the air pump belt. However, there is a tan wire that goes to the black round relay (beside bright red relay) on the fender well by headlights. May have pulled a wire loose from the spade connector, as they hook to the relay from the bottom.

Hope this helps. I have parts ordered, then I still have to figure out the best way to fix that amplifier to ECU wire so it doesn't ground out.

Phil

ok thanks ill check all that, and see if i can correct them.
as for the wire on amp that goes to the coax looking wire i just trimmed back the outer mesh wire and stripd the inner wire and connected it to amp wire and taped it good with elect tape.shrink wrap would be good.
now i just have to figure out why i have no spark.

ok i just found a diagnosis page in my shop manual.it says to test power amp I used a volt meter set at 20v and to put one lead on + side battery (I used post at fire wall).and other lead on neg side of coil.with ign on( not cranking) volts should read 0.00 and it does.then crank eng and voltage should be between 2 and 3 volts.for good amp.mine is only 1.2 so im thinking bad power amp?can anyone possibly confirm this.?does anyone have or know where i can get a good used ign amp? 84 xjs H E 5.3

Default 84 xjs ign amp

ok was doing some research.can the ign amp be tested off the car? and im confused does the ign amp send 12v to ecu when key is on or does 12v come from ecu?where does amp get its power from?I have no spark.I checked coils there good within value.I checked pick up leads to dist they ohm out to 3.8 so pick up in dist is good.with key on both sides of coils have 12v with key on the wire hooked to the coax wire from amp going to ecu has steady 12v the other wire that goes to tach has 5v but when have volt meter hooked to neg side of coil and other lead to pos post on fire wall with key on i have 0.00v thats good.but when i crank eng i only have .45 to 1.4 volts from amp to neg side coil book says need 2 to 3 volts needed is this reason for no spark to plugs??
