Unhappy 1986 XJS 6 cylinder acceleration problems.

Once in a while, no precursor signs, the engine just stops as soon as the acelerator pedal is touched, or just stops.

Restarting, engine just starts and will run for an unpredictable time.

Must be the injection system or some electronics.

Has anyone got any idea ?

Thanks,

Takeo.

First thoughts.

The TPS, mounted under the throttle body. They did, and still do, suffer from throttle body "goo" running down the throttle shaft, and seeping into the TPS, gravity be the fiend here.

Some respond well to a good clean wiith P/pack carby cleaner, some do not. TPS removed of course, and the throttle body kept clean.

I clean all mine at each oil change, takes mere minutes, 6 or 12 cylinder.

Thank you, Francis.
Our club president, Claude (82 yo) will appreciate it.
I translated it for him.

It's kinda important whether touching accelerator pedal is the cause, or engine just stops randomly. Does it stop if accelerator is pressed little more than a touch?

I would check all electrical connectors related to ignition, including TPS and high voltage cable to distributor cap. I had intermittent power loss, turned out connection to 'power resistor'. Cleaning and plugging it back solved problem.

Also, check vacuum line connection to the control block in the trunk.
