The Lutz Stage 1 cooling system modification will solve a great deal of your problem along with the comments from DD and Grant. T-stats too short or semi-functional don't help.....Lutz Stage 1 mod moves the cooling flow to the back of the block as the system is basicallly lazy.....with the mod....
Norm Lutz calculated a new flow of something like 40%to the front where the Wtr. pump is located and 60% to the back where #s 5-6 cylindrs get hot (both sides), go into a shutdown heat soak and wait for that wonderful Ka-chinking of a dropped valve seat. When you do the mod. look for a 3/4 nylon bushing/ grommet from your friendly electrical supply or local hardware.....and insert in the T-stat casting at the bypass hole to provide an improved seal for the t-stat foot. The Lutz Stage 1 is simple and very straight forward to perform.....will attempt attache photos or PM me and I will send them to you. Best, JW I posted photos of the seals somewhere here on the XJ-S/V12 threads........very nice machine........drive it like you stole it once you get the cooling system sorted.
