If some silly person were silly enough to disconnect the battery while the car was running (running good) What would be the result ?
How many electrical components will need "renewed" ?
Yes I ( I mean He) got the book AFTER he tried to check the alternator.
Now the car wont start

Welcome to the forum apup76,
I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJS forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.
You should add whether it won't fire or won't even turn over ...........
When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Welcome also.
That is a huge NO NO. Especially with a Lucas alternator.
Chances are you have fried a number of things.
The alternator regulator without a battery to "feedback" from will SPIKE. That could be 32v, so damage can occur.
When you disconnected the battery, did the car continue running, or die??.
The answer to that will give me half a clue as to what you have probably damaged, and what has possibly survived.
If it continued running and YOU switched it off, then maybe very little.
If it died a painful death, then the long search will begin.
Restarting may have NOTHING to do with what you did, feeling lucky, as a great man once said.

Hi Grant ,
Judging from your response and the CAUTION note in the repair manual maybe I made a mistake huh ?
Yes the car died when I disconnected the battery. It does turnover (crank) easily and it fired for a split second twice at the moment I turned the key.
This was my Dads car it has been out of service for 6 years and only started a few times. My brother got the gas tank cleaned out and got it running. When I went to get it the battery was completely dead. I put the motorcycle trickle charger (2amps) on it for a week and it started ok a few times and I drove it a few miles around the neighborhood. It runs exceedingly smooth. MY 6 cyl honda car is rough by comparison.
It has many electrical problems with lights and wipers and gas gauge and oil psi , also the volt gauge . BEFORE I touched it but the engine was running good
But I have the book now Could yo help direct my efforts ?
