Default 1989 XJS No Brake Lights

Hi, haven't had a problem with this Jaguar in about 3 years of enjoyable driving! The brake lights aren't coming on, probably not working for years. The center brake light works, on a different wire I think. Anyway, I have power to the relay under the glove box. It is clicking. No power at bulbs??? What could be wrong? It looks like a green wire comes out of the brake light, then heads into a bundle going toward the front of the car. The wiring diagram indicates a connector, then a green/pink wire, I don't see this. Also, the wiring diagram indicates 3 green/pink wires coming out of the relay. Mine has a thick brown, a thick brown/red, two white/blue, and a purple/brown wire. Help, please.

Between the relay and the lamps is the brake light failure unit. Under the centre console

Yes, I found a reference to the location of the brake light failure unit in my manual. Under the console, like you said. I have the console removed...now to find it....

My God! I think you are correct! I found the relay and none of the wires are connected to it, they are just dangling there. I'm a bit scared to connect them, maybe there's a dead short. Anyway, I'll do it tomorrow.

What could have happened under the console to 'dangle' the wires? Were they and have they always been like that? If so, that might not be the source of your problem...

On my 1990, under the driver's dash and way up on the arm of the peddle, there is an extension or small bar type thing that is what comes into contact with the underdash brake light switch... Sorry, this is all from memory. But what I remember having to do when I had what sounds like the exact same problem, was (re) place a rubber sleeve that had either came loose or crumbled on the bar/post thing. I replaced with a short section of hard rubber hose and used a very small hose clamp to keep it in place... Low and behold,,, and there was light...

Problem resolved!!! I hooked up the relay under the console and now the lights work! I am embarrassed to say I have put 500 miles a year, for 6 years on this car, with no brake lights. Thank you Munk! Jay, I had my head under there, by the brake switch, and, it seemed to be work properly. Besides that, I was getting power to a relay under the dash when I would step on the brakes, so the switch worked. But thank you for your input.
