Default 1990 Jaguar XJS - Tire Time

Hello all...

It's tire time. I am pleased to say that I can now drive this old girl (but shouldn't) at the turn of the key. It's been a long time coming. I have new upper and lower ball joints coming but am still amazed at how few (barely any) creeeeks and rattles have been showing up in these early 100miles or so. Both lower ball joint boots are completely shot and any clanking I hear I think has to do with that. Anyways, I ordered my first set of ball joints from British Parts and they are on there way. I'm sure I will upgrade to lemforder (or better) soon. This is just for now.

I have a question about tires. I was always scared to LOOK at the age of the tires on the car (see pic) but I THINK this says 2006,,, lol??? Yikes!!! The tires "look" good (all of em) from a distance, have plenty of thread, but I wouldn't be surprised if they flew apart. There is one Pirelli P600,,, one Cooper Cobra - fronts,,, and 2 old BF Goodrich 235/60 r15 rears... All cracked and plastic-E...

One question... I know these are 225s,,, but will 235s fit on the front? I'd like 235/60 all the way round if they will fit...?

https://m.tirerack.com/tires/tires.j...rtnum=26VR5ELX

And while I have ya,,, will these injector plugs work?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131584456091

As always,,, thank ya all for your guidance and support!

It seems I have 235s on the front already...
Thoughts on these?

235 60's will fit, though 225 60s will ride and steer better, IMO.

Yes, reassurance is still good, needed and,,, reassuring, lol.
Thanks Greg... I spoke with a local Forum member last night by chance and went with the 235s... These. I think I ended up doing fairly well and will feel much better in a couplah weeks cruising up the coast of the Sound on something other than 14yo tires... Many thanks,,, and then thanks again! See ya on the flip side 😊

Jaguar used 235/60x15 as standard issue for several years.

One thing that always rankled me, though, was the decision to mount 235 tires on 6.5" wide wheels. That's a bit skinny for a 235 tire

Cheers

Hey Man.

Yeah, there is something I've always liked about the "over hang" with tires that are a bigger than the wheels... I'll take this. I'm new to the Jaguar world,,, went almost 2decades without cars living in cities,,, but I've been wondering why Jag even used 15 and 6.5 inch wheels on such a car. Seems small. Today, in the eera of big lumpy cars, seems Toyota Corollas will come with a 20inch wheel, lol...

I'm excited about my new tires, I have to say. Like Christmas or sumpthin, haha... I didn't know this was me. I'm up to 4 cars now. Crazzzy

Now,,, I have to figure out what is going on with what seems like a DEAD cylinder. 3a... If I pull the FI plug off the injector,,, zero change in engine run. Strange. I'll work at it til I figure it out OR,,, a new thread. SMH

JJJ
What is the speed rating of those tyres? If it is lower than the car's top speed, you must make sure you do not exceed the speed rating of the tyre.
In europe, even though hte speed limts are about 50% of the top speed of the XJS v12, it is illegal to have tyres on the car of a lower speed rating than the top speed of the car.

Hey Greg... It's a 98T... And in a quick search I came up with T representing 120mph... I guess that means the tire is ok,,, until 120mph which ain't never gunna happen in this thing with me driving,,, unless I have to run from and escape Grant, lol

I think I should be ok...

Question NOW is,,, white letters IN or OUT?
- A question that might turn this into a ISHT storm thread, haha

My 89 XJS Parts car came with white letter 235 / 60 x15 BFG's, and the white letters were out. While the look wasn't totally in line with the slinky elegance, that the XJS is known for. It wasn't a repulsive look either. One note of caution. About BFG's If they are out of date, or dry rotted! Even if they look like new otherwise! Do not use them they can come apart almost instantly, especially if they have sat for a long time. Looks are very deceiving when it comes to BFG's. I have had several sets, and they are good tires until they start to dry crack, which they will do, whether they sit or not. They crack a lot quicker, if they sit any length of time. Be careful, as I've torn up a fender or 2 because of them. Fortunately I've never lost one at High Speed. 60 or 70 will tear up some sheetmetal, 120+ could easily kill you.

I went with the Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring H rated tire. H corresponds to a 130 mph. speed rating. There are higher speed rating tires available in this line, but not in the 15 inch size. I totally agree that I would never drive my car at sustained speeds of 100 mph unless every mechanical bit was fully restored. The highest speeds that I ever drive my cars is 85 mph. The condition of the roads and the presence of the Highway Patrol kind of keep a lid on speed.

Yeah, up on the rack... Finally.

I'll report back in a bit. Not sure what I'll report CUZ I'm no expert at these sorts of ideas,,, but I know this is a good day for the old lady. From what I've come to understand,,, ladies don't like 15 year old shoes...

guys here wanna talk with me about her. Didn't expect that. How did I become, "that guy"?

IMO best choice is 225/60 R15, always in V-speed rate

These tires OVER those 15yo things, hands down... On my first day driving I had a little bit of an adventure (broke down thread) so I didn't come back to this til now.

The new tires make a big difference. Drove in the rain today, felt right. The old tires, even tho the tread on all four looked BRAND NEW, the way these stick to the road is like night and day. Another thing that isn't happening anymore is what I would describe as plowing... With the old tires,,, they must have been like plastic,,, even when I cut the wheel moving super slowly, the tires would kinda skid along the pavement. Faster speeds I would occasionally hear the sound of squealing rubber on a corner. Crusty ride is how I'd describe it. All that is gone.

235s, ride is quiet (drove top down so there was wind), balance seems right... It's all a damn good thing!

Thanks all!
