1990 Jaguar XJS V12 bonnet
I need to purchase a bonnet for my 1990 XJS. I can get one from a member of this forum and I have to pay the shipping cost.
Does anyone know the weight of the bonnet?. The packaging size would be approx 60'x60'x 6' or maybe 60"x60"x8"
Also which years are compatible with the 1990 model?
I was thinking that the bonnet could be wrapped in 1/2 inch foam then boxed up. Any ideas?
I need to have an idea of the weight of the hood to approach FEDEX, USPS or UPS to get an approximate cost.

Bonnets are super heavy but I couldn't give you a number.
Just lifting them to open them on the car is a workout.
Certain years are NOT compatible with others.
But if it's from a 85 or earlier or 94 or later I'm guessing it won't fit.
Put a wanted ad in the classified and be specific as to budget and location.
Anything of that magnitude is likely to be damadged unless you insure the s**t out of it.

I thought of another issue with hood compatibility.
Around 1994/5 the way the bonnet catches is completely different.
Prior to 1995 you just gently close to bonnet then pull the hood closed from inside the car.
After then you gently drop the bonnet closed and it doesn't require anything else.
The internal structure of these bonnets are NOT COMPATIBLE.

Hello all.
I was able to locate a 1989 XJS bonnet for the 1990 XJS at my local LKQ warehouse. (7 miles from my home). They just called me to let me know that I can pick up the bonnet tomorrow.
The bonnet is still on the car. I will see if there are other parts I will need.
They claim that the bonnet has no damage but I am keeping my fingers crossed. I know deep down I will have some work to do on it, regardless. As long as it has no rot and dents I will be a happy camper. It will have to be painted to the color of the car of course.
I have dealt with them a few times and LKQ is always truthful about the condition of their used car parts.

I purchased a bonnet yesterday. It is in good condition. Even the original heat barrier on the underside of the bonnet is in excellent condition.

I also spoke to the previous owner of the car and what he told me does not bode well for the engine. I am also picking up a second engine, just in case.
Here is what he told me:
He took the car to the above mentioned "Jaguar Doctor" to get an oil change. During the drive back to his home the oil light started flickering. He called the mechanic and was told not to worry, it's probably the age of the wiring and he should bring the car back to the shop.
On his way there he said the engine started to shake violently and started to lose power. At the same time he noticed that the engine temp was rising and the engine was blowing a lot of smoke from the exhaust, so he pulled over and shut the car down. The mechanic towed the car to his shop and was told that the engine was blown up and the price he was quoted for the repair was beyond his budget so he donated the car to the president of the Jaguar Club to see what he could get for the car.
I started the car and it fired up but I did not let it run for long. (Less than a minute) I did not hear any engine knocks so I am hopeful that the bottom end is good.
I am purchasing the car because it is in very good shape besides the engine. I am also picking up an engine ($200) with the hope of taking two engines and making one. The second engine has a dropped valve. so says the jaguar club guy.
I am into this already, so I am keeping all my fingers and toes crossed.
