1990 XJS convertible quarter windows wont go down
Good afternoon,
I am new to the Jaguar scene.........just bought a 1990 Jag XJs V12 convertible with only 40k miles on it.
When I put the top down, the rear quarter windows do not go down? What can I check? I dont see fuses, but assume there is a relay? Lady said they were working??
Please help, sooooo frustrating! Thanks!!

i'm sure you've tried already but....
I bought my '91 (with only 9,800 miles on it!) a few months ago and had a similair experience, until I found that you must keep pressing the down switch even after the top is down, then eventually the rear windows go down. When I stopped pressing before the windows went down I had to cycle back to putting the top up and then back down again. Works fine now, I just have to remember to not let go of the switch until the windows are down.

I just bought a 1990 convertible myself a few weeks ago and had a similar problem. My quarter windows were stuck half way up. It wasn't till I figured out that I had to hold the switch down through the whole cycle that they would work. I basically had to put the top down and back up for it to move the windows. But before I figured this out I ended up checking all the relays for it. I don't remeber exactly which one was which but they were located in the bottom of the cubby behind the front seats. There was a whole row of them that worked for the top and windows. I would assume that they would be in the same spot since we have the same car..... Congrats on your purchase!

Putting the top up and down is a multi-step process for the car. Hold the button down, the top will go down. Keep holding it and the windows will retract. Hold the button for "Up," the top will go up. Keep holding it and the windows will come up.
It works, too, for opening the rear windows with the top raised, you just have to wait. Keep the latches closed, hold the "Down" button and wait a little bit, then the windows will open. Hold the "Up" button, wait 12-15 seconds, and the windows will raise. If you let go of the button, the 12-15 second delay resets itself.
Have patience, hold the button. If they still won't move, and you have power to the circuit, then the motors are shot. Digging down to them is painful--on my car, it took two standard and two metric wrenches plus a torx bit that was not it my set, requiring a trip to the store . . .

When swapping my rear speakers on my 94 xjs I noticed the connectors to the rear quarter window motors were heavily corroded. They are exposed when the top is down... I cleaned them with deoxit and selaed them up real good. The quarter windows have been working fine since.

Justininaz,
There are some slight misunderstandings on this thread. The rear windows are NOT supposed to go down after the hood has gone down. They are supposed to go down BEFORE the hood goes down. This is to avoid the hood catching the window. And when you put the hood up, there is an 8-second delay before the windows come back up, again to avoid the hood catching them.
If the hood does go down, I think it means that power is definitely going through the winfow relays, so the problem probably lies in the motor connection or the motors themselves.
Good luck
Paul

I have a 1990 XJS v12 with just 54K on the clock. My experience with the rear windows is not great and I’ve done some investigation along with KWE of Newbury who specialise in these beasts. KWE have gone so far as to have new cogs created because reality is that the motors overdrive the windows on both the up and down. This means over time that the cogs wear and you end up either with the windows stuck down or stuck up.
I've taken another route in that I've added two switches in the arm rest so that I can manually raise and lower the windows whenever I want. It has two effects. 1 I no longer overdrive the windows. 2 I can raise them whilst the top is down which along with the front windows means I get less wind buffering. Yes you have to remember to lower before you pop the hood up or down, but you only have to do that a very small amount so very little on going wear on the cogs.

thank you all for the suggestions.
i bought today a 1990 perfectly kept xjs. i flew from the east cost to qthe west coast to check it.vall is great, exept for the wuarter passenger window being stuck down. the seller, a fine brit gentleman, swear it was working. we have tried to hold up and down the switches (maybe not as long as 8 second) and altohugh the driver seat one would come up. the seller gave me a 500 buks price reduction but i fear the cost and headhake may be bigger.
i like the suggestion of Aabbs, alothugh. i wander how complicated it is, and in any event the window will have to moove first snyhow. how complicated snd expensive may be to have it done professionally? thnx for any recomandation you may have.

Every now and then when mine sticks down, I have to take the side panel off and tap the motor with a small hammer. (I must sort that out)
Someone gave the tip that if you are having problems with the windows, take the screw that can be seen through the window holding the top of the side trim out. Its impossible to get at if the window sticks up.
