1990 XJS wheel speed sensors

Doug,
How do you mean "clean the sensors"? The sensors should have a flat surface, and the ABS ring on the hub is a toothed surface. When there's a problem, it's often that the flat surface of the sensor has some muck on it, or that the toothed ring on the hub has become clogged which confuses the sensor because it doesn't "see" the gaps.
So "cleaning" should involve just removing the sensor from the hub and checking its surface, then checking that the toothed ring on the hub isn't clogged. Also check the integrity of the wiring plug at the end of the lead from the sensor.
Good luck
Paul

Hi Doug,
The rears are behind the outer hub just behind the bit the road wheel bolts to i.e., nowhere near the in-board disc assembly. Try finding and following the corrugated plastic sheath protecting the wires - it should lead you straight to the sensor.
The service manual does not say anything about removing shocks to get to the front sensors but I would be interested to hear how you get on as I may well have to do the same job myself.
Cheers,
LeeP

Check out this Excellent Post with Photos, where it shows the Rear Sensors.

First, ABS sensors do not need regular cleaning, they are a VR sensor and generate a pulse when the tooth passes, dirt will have no effect on the sensors ability to send a pulse. Metal debris is another story, this can cause erroneous pulses. VR sensors have a small protrusion on the front that can be damaged by large debris, so if you do remove them be careful.
Front sensors are a bugger to get at, they can be done just remove the lower shock bolt and this should give enough access.
