1994 XJS V12 interior wood trim
Hi, how would I know what type of veneer/ color - do I have in my 1994 XJS12 coupe? The interior of the car is ivory and the car is black
I noticed a little crack - a tiny hairline - and I would like to fix that but do not know where to order the part from
It appears to be much lighter then the one in my 1996 convertible and 2003 SuperV81994 SAJNX5345RC190047
Its located near the center front vent - below the dash board
Thanks
Terry

Terry,
I'm not sure if there were any variances for US or other markets, but I BELIEVE there were 3 different types of wood veneer used in the life of the XJS:
1981 - at intro of HE model - Burr Elm Veneer
1986 - V12s changed to Burr Walnut Veneer (as a result of world supply problems due to Dutch Elm disease)
1987ish - 3.6 litre changed to Burr Walnut
1991 - Facelift - Burr Walnut continues?
May 1995 - from VIN 221855 ("Celebration") - all cars changed to Sapwood Veneer
As you've probably noticed, there are often differences in colour sets between cars and they all fade at differing rates.
I've always found that if you need just one bit produced, you can go to someone such as Myrtle Ltd and send some very clear photos and ask them to make a bit that matches. That's what I did for my Trip Computer veneer on my 94-built car..
Hope that helps
Paul

Thing is with Jag wood is that the left and right are mirror images of each other, with a split in the veneer right in the centre. ie look at the pieces on the top of the doors--they are two successive veneers off the log. This follows across the dash. Personally, I'd try to repair the piece, otherwise replace the set as Vee suggested. Back in the Series 3 days, I believe the factory kept extras on hand for each car produced. Not sure whether this is true or if it might apply to your car. Maybe Paul's Jaguar can help with replacments if you go that route. pauls_jaguar
The original finish is a 2K clear such as https://www.napacanada.com/en/p/MAX3680061
It is likely that the crack is through the finish but not the wood, so remove the old finish. I googled interiors of your car and see burled walnut.

I would contact Paul and include a picture of the wood trim around your speedometer, as that has a tendency to not fade from direct sunlight. He is extremely handy and I myself purchased an original trim set from him as mine was really faded to the point that you couldn't tell what it was except for the trim around the speedo.

I'm sure it can be fixed. You'd need to get the wood chemically stripped, rather than sanded. The veneer is very thin, so it's incredibly easy to sand through it to the base underneath. I believe the finish is a polyester ( not polyurathane), so won't be that easy to strip.
The wood is all bookmatched and will have come from the same tree, so you can't replace the wood and have the same grain. If you have an experienced woodworker or cabinetmaker in your area they might be able to to help you.

I'd tend to agree with Jagboi. I think a veneer specialist could strip and refinish / lacquer the part if the damage is in the seal coat and not extending into the veneer. The issue might be whether you can just do that one piece or whether you need to do the adjoining pieces in order to match the top finish? I'd be minded to carefully remove the pieces and actually take them somewhere and let them see them

The wood does look sunbleached, I think you might be ok with a stripping and refinishing. Sometimes the finish does yellow, you'll be able to tell once it is removed and you can put it against an original piece. You're in the realm of furniture restoration, not automotives here!
