1996 XJS 4.0 ECU guarantee?

Why didn't you come back here and ask for some help? I really wish you had done that first.
Nothing really to help you with now I guess. I suspect the XJ6 ECU was looking for some kind of security input that it never got, died from using up the battery power and then when you recharged it, it might still be looking for some security check, which it isn't getting.
That's just my thought, but someone else will certainly know more.

This is a hypothetical question… Could someone mail me a throttle body and ECU, I mount it on my 95 XJS, program it, mail it backm and expect it to work correctly? Could i test an 96 ECU by plugging it into my 95?
I have a PDU and the later IDS with a VCM and have only had one person take me up on the offer to come over and use it. Veekay had an interesting idea mailing out the laptop and VCM to people… and he might do it on faith, you’d have to ask what he meant… but they’re really quite valuable and I don’t know anyone is going to give a stranger (me) a $1500 deposit. If someone kept it and kept the deposit, I really rather have the VCM setup than the money so anyway…
What is the theoretical possibility of doing this type of service “mail order”?
BTW the high idle can be literally wear in the TPS plastic body. The plastic gets worn and notchy and gets caught open with randomness. Happened to me around 140k.

If someone sent me a throttle body with TPS attached, and a corresponding ECU, then yes, I would be able to install it on my car, reset the TPS parameters then mail all of it back and it should be fine, assuming nothing shifted in the mail.
To avoid the shifting, someone could set the TPS so that the voltage is known at the time of the reset, so even if something shifted in transit, the owner should be able to readjust the TPS using a multimeter.
For the second question, I believe 95 and 96 XJS ECUs are interchangeable, although the 95 will always carry strange LTFT numbers over time. They seem to have a calculation error somewhere.
