1996 XJS Front floor carpeting
Haven't been on the site for a while as I have been busy moving into a new home.
Anyway, I'm back and need your advice.
Have just repaired some tired original leather interior and it looks great, now I need two (2) pcs. of carpet...Drivers & Passengers front floor.
Have been looking all day but just can't seem to find just the pcs. I need. They want to sell the entire kit.
Any thoughts, experiences etc. are appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

I ordered replacements for my wifes 94 2+2 XJS from J.C.Whitney.
The front piece did not come with the driver vinyl footpad. I think it was $35 extra.
The rear pieces just fit the rear foot wells. They did not extend up under the seats
like the original pieces. The quality of the mats were very nice.
Better than the original mats from Jaguar.
The original rear pieces did not look too bad. The backing was crumbling.
Upon closer inspection, the backing looked like a rubber coating. I had a can
of that stuff "Flex-Seal". You know the stuff the guy sprays on a screen door
and installs in the bottom of a boat and it floats with no leaks.
Well, I sprayed the bottoms of the rear mats liberally and let dry.
Darned if they didn't look almost new. I put the originals back in and placed the new
rear mats on top of the originals. Nice look.
J.C. Whitney price including shipping was about $130.00. Not too shabby for the price.
The rear mats require removal of the seats on the 94 XJS in order to replace the
mats. I'm not sure if the 96 has the same fitment.
You need a TORX bit #30 to remove the 4 screws holding the seat rails on.
I got $.85 in change from under the passenger seat. $.65 more and I have enough for
a beer!
Both sides have the seat control cables attached to the seats. You don't have to totally remove the seats from the Jag. Just remove the bolts in order to remove the
carpets and maybe look for some beer money. Use the opportunity to vacuum under
there.

My question on this is which models had fasteners for the mats and which did not? Since the later models with power seats have the metal foot plate in front of the seat to house the wiring and module, where are the mats supposed to attach?
I just ordered new mats and they put grommets in it where their system said it was supposed to have them, but they do not line up with any hole on my wiring cover plate so they will not work for me and I have to get a replacement or refund/order again. *the frustration is real*
I've seen only confusing mixed answers when trying to figure it out by image searches. Some models have the shorter mats+heel pad with turnbuckles, some have the longer mats+no heel pad (only the 1995/1996 celebration models it seems?) and on those I see some with/without hooks/buckles.
Can we try to find a definitive answer on this?!

The hooks to hold the floor mats from sliding forward were a safety feature that was added after the fact. If the car was ordered with floor mats then the dealer was required to install the hooks on the drivers side. This requirement was a result of some car's floor mats interfering with the brake or gas pedals and caused accidents. This was a federal requirement of all manufactures. I have full length floor mats but the safety hooks were never installed and my driver side matt has the eyelets for the hooks. My 99 XJ8L has the matt with one hook between the door and seat track.

Okay, I see you have a '95, I haven't found anyone else with the long mats too, so tell me, what's under yours? Under mine are the black housings for the seat module, with no carpet liner on them, with some old velcro strips on them, and further down is the foam padding.

scarbro2011, would you mind posting a pic of the mats you received from JCWhitney? I got some from another company reseller of Lloyds Mats and they were wrong shape and had grommets in the wrong place so their info is wrong for the 1996 model I guess. Does your wife's '94 have the smaller front mats with fasteners? My car came with just long mats to cover the seat module housings all the way down to pedals.

My 95's last part of the serial number is 199271 and build date is 1-95. That should tell you when yours was built compared to mine. I have a full carpet set under my mats and glued down on the seat computer cover plates. I have some pictures of the the carpet and how it is installed at the cover plate. The floor mat has two eyelets where they should attach to the hooks that were to be installed after the car was built.

I've just ordered some new 'carpet' for mine, from Pauls Jaguar in FL. Jeremy there told me what some people are calling 'mats' are actually the factory carpet, and then there is an 'overmat', the thing with the soft extra pad and optional grommets/eyelets. I'll post a pic of mine when it arrives in a week or so. It seems each year models they changed things just for the sake of it, not always for the better, not sure if the same applies to this carpet/mats variation (or should I say discrepancy?)
Here is mine, but whether it is factory or not I've no clue. It seems old enough to be, but has no velcro, eyelets or retaining clip underneath.

I see! OKay, I can now confirm that the earlier models had a carpeted metal module housing in front of the seat, with carpet that is attached with turnbuckles, on top of which the mats would have laid.
In the last models they changed to use one long piece of carpet which had the retainer clip to hold in in place on the module housing, and the mat would have laid on top of that.
It is easy to confuse the carpet with the mat. It seems to be, from what I've been told by Paul's Jaguar, the early carpets were 2-piece with short mats that use turnbuckles, and later carpets were one piece with retainer clip underneath.
