1996 XJS High idle.
#21
Hello! New member, Patrick in SanDiego, 1996 XJS, 4.0 litre, AJ16 engine.
I am in the same situation, needing the TPS reset. For me, my car was stalling and rough idle. A new TPS fixed it! But I have the resulting high idle 1300 - 1500 rpm.
I also did not get a response from the JLR web site.
So, I would like to get some more details on the genrad 3500? Since it worked I would like to buy from the same seller, if you recommend them. What is the added help you got from other members to successfully reprogram? Does it require a laptop?
Ebay is also advertising another programmer called TOAD, wondering if that would work?
Thank you very much, Patrick

The seller was someone on ebay, it was as they had described with all the
cables I needed. Mine was A Ford WDS. I got a new HDD for it and mounted the Jaguar discs which I got from XJRguy and help from motorcarman. You do not need a laptop as it is a self contained unit, they are what the dealers used in the late 90's.
Regards,
Craig.

High Idle fixed
Thanks for the info!
Yes I am sure that there is someone (Jag dealer or indy) here in my neighborhood that I can take it to. But, I really want to do this myself.
I have notched the TPS mounting holes and have a voltage range of 0.55 to 1.5 volts. I haved tried setting the TPS at different locations in the range but my idle does not go below 1000rpm?
So, I am looking for the scan tool Craig used or purchase the IDS that Vee has.

I believe, and don't quote me on this, that the idle voltage should be at 0.6V.
What you should quote me on is the possibility that you may need to reset parameters that the IDS cannot do.
Craig, will your system offer an option to reset throttle adaptations? I can confirm the Mongoose with IDS cannot.
It is possible, if not probable, that once you successfully reset your TPS your idle will not come down. You will need to log miles on the car so it can adjust the throttle settings, or get it reset.
I have only gotten this done by a shop that owns a PDU.

I'm not sure what may happen in the background, but I selected TPS reset
and it gave me two options "is this the original TPS or a new one". I selected new, which may reset everything associated with it.
The other options available on the page are O2 sensor orientation, kick down setup, and fuel trim. The fuel trim allows me to get as far as inputting the Co2 value, then I get an error code (4-8) an can not proceed any further.
Hope this sheds some light.
Craig.

Yes, great information! I wish I lived close to one of you, to try your scan programs (system).
I too have performed the IACV procedure many times. It does set the IACV to the "block air position" and with the IACV unplugged my car barely idles. As soon as I plug in the connector and turn on the motor, TPS set to 0.6volts, idle jumps up to 1300 rpm. As Vee noted on the 1996 AJ16 engine there is no idle adjustment screw? Should I be manually setting the IACV at this point in the procedure?
I also have noticed when my motor is idling with the IACV pluged in, the IACV gets very hot. It is actually too hot to touch?
Another note is that I have pretty much replaced every associated sensor trying to solve my hesitation/motor dying problem. Coolant temp sensor, cleaned throttle body, fuel filter, EGR, air filter. The TPS replacement being the last - fixed it. So close now.

I just got a response from the TOAD (total car diagnostics) engineers and it cannot reprogram the TPS.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Yes, TOAD is compatible with your car (1996 XJS). Including all the date you're currently reading.
2) "can I use it to reprogram the TPS sensor?" -> No.
Otherwise you can read more about TOAD here: http://www.totalcardiagnostics.com/toad
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:
British diagnostics responded to my same query and they comfirmed their IDS will work on the the 1996 XJS, as long as it has the OBDII port. Cost is approximately $150 for software and cable, need to have a laptop.
Genrad 3500, works. Have to purchase it used, last one I saw on ebay was $200. Did not include jaguar disc. No listings currently.

Vee,
I think there may be some confusion here, I used WDS to reset my
TPS not TOAD. Reseting the fuel trims does require the exhaust emissions
Co2 value,
which I have but it still gave me an error code. Not sure if it
had to do with the battery voltage of my car, from what I understand it
can have conrol of the ECU being flashed or not.

I have a similar problem with my 1995 XJS - 4 liter 6-cylinder.
When I start the engine, it idles around 1200 RPM, then when I shift into Drive or Reverse, it goes down to ~800 RPM. At stop lights, the idle is inconsistent and can vary from around 800 to 500 RPM. It gets shaky and seems like it might be about to stall.
Here's what I've done:
The symptoms make it seem like the TPS is faulty and needs to be replaced, or that the ECU needs to be reprogrammed to recognize this TPS. I believe that the 13% throttle position reading is correct, so I don't think that is it. Could this be the IACV? Even though I just got a replacement (used)? What else could it be?

Here's what I've done:
- Replaced the crankshaft position sensor
- Replaced the Bosch platinum spark plugs with copper Champion RC12YC plugs (old plugs looked fine)
- Previous owner had an idle air control valve/motor installed very poorly, so badly that the threads on one of the mounting bolts were sticking out of the throttle body, so I got a replacement (used) throttle body and IACV, but kept the old throttle position sensor
- Thoroughly cleaned and lubricated the throttle body
- Used an OBDII reader to check the throttle position, reads ~13% with nothing touching the gas pedal

There are several possiblities that can result in high idle on these engines (AJ16).
I started my quest to solve my problem of hesitation and stalling by removing and cleaning the throttle body. After putting it back together I had high idle for one day and then it went back to normal idle on its own. Car ran fine for two weeks and then the hesistation/stalling returned.
Over the next several weeks I replaced crankshaft postion sensor, coolant temp sensor, fuel filter, air filter, EGR valve, and ran the manual IACV procedure after each. None of these items solved the hesitation/stalling but, I did not have high idle after replacing them.
Then I replaced the TPS and noticed a difference. Engine performed better and it stopped hesitating/stalling. But, I cannot get the idle to come down.
I am now running with the IACV disconnected. The climate where I live is very stable so this is a temporary fix for now.
I need the IDS software and cable to program the new TPS paramaters. I did manually adjust the new TPS (mounting holes) to get its voltage to 0.6 volts at idle - this did not work.
I am also considering getting a new IACV. The unit itself gets very hot when it is plugged in and the car is warmed up, too hot to eaven touch?

If you want to make sure the IACV is not bad, you could unplug the IACV and see if the symptom occurs. If it does the IACV is the cause of the problem.
If not, it could be the TPS or the air flow sensor.

My 96 XJS was running at a high idle for a number of weeks. Had to keep foot on brake at stop lights. Subsequently, it dropped to low idle and would stall at stop lights. Check engine light was on. Next time we tried to start it, the battery was low. Charged the battery. The engine started after a long crank period, ran rough for about 30 seconds and died. I have been unable to start it since. I will follow some of the leads that I read in the forum and elsewhere.
Wish me luck!

Did you manage to pull the codes? Check engine light should have given you something to start with.

I just ordered a Big Banana 600 Code reader. I'll start working the problem after I receive it. May clean the crank sensor in the meantime. The car has 100K miles on it but now sits most of the time. The wife is afraid that it is unreliable and hesitates to use it. The nearest mechanic is 100 miles away so I'll have to learn to diagnose and fix the problem when it will not start.

I unplugged the IACV and the idle was exactly the same! I'm going to try replacing the IACV. Thank you, Japthug!

So, with a new IACV, new throttle body, and new CPS, the motor idles at ~1400 RPM in Park or Neutral, then at ~750 RPM in Drive or Reverse. In Park or Neutral, the idle fluctuates between ~900 and ~1400. It fluctuates a little in Drive and Reverse, too. According to my OBDII reader, the throttle position sensor reads ~13% with no pressure on the pedal, which I think is correct.
What else should I be looking for? Is it possible that the ECU will get used to the new IACV and the idle will get better over time?

Above was an important recall for 1995/1996 XJS Jaguars. I had checked mine after I had uncontrolled idle speed issues also.
I had performed a check to see if the correct labels were displayed on throttle and ECM. My car was resolved through original dealership. For some background info: my car was built early in 1996. ( March )
There are some that weren't as lucky to have been repaired by the dealership. I would check to see if yours have been resolved.
My issue was to clean throttle body and reset ECM to original settings.
