1996 XJS stuck in limp mode
Hello,
I have a 1995 XJS with 200k on it. It is stuck in LM with 5 codes
#420 cat system below threshold bank 1
#430 the same -bank 2
#314 no dtc definition found -see manual
#316 same as #314
#300 random multiple misfire
#340 cam position sensor bank 1
Not sure where to start as one mechanic said to begin with the cam sensor, he wants $100 to install and the sensor is $425.
Have had the car since new - Any help you can suggest would be great as money is Tight right now
Thank you
Mike

You can install that sensor yourself....and the sensor should be less than $450!
I would start with that sensor and new coils and plugs.
Get Champion RC12YC (71), or NGK BKR5E, nothing else. That should be less than $20.
Buy a set of six QYL branded coils from Amazon. That should be less than $100.
Buy Camshaft Position Sensor (not crankSHAFT position sensor) DBC11501, try to buy the OEM, which seems to be over $200. I don't know, maybe the aftermarket for $60 will work here? I have no experience with aftermarket CPS....
These are all easy and simple things to change. You can do it yourself. No special tools required. Spark plugs and coils will take you less than an hour, adjusting for first time. CPS should take you 20 minutes.

Mike,
All good points from the guys.
But, you might just get away with a different approach. The ecus really don't like low voltage and the car can throw spurious codes. When my alternator failed and I tried to drive the car home, my voltage dropped lower and lower until the car went into Restricted Performance limp mode and eventually stalled driving up a hill and I had to be recovered. With the alternator fixed and the battery charged, everything was ok.
So disconnect the battery, charge it until it's fully charged. Reconnect it and see if the problem has cleared. If not, clear down the codes if you can or get your mechanic to do it. Again see if the problem just goes away.
Good luck
Paul
