Default 2 more problems

1-- Passenger side, Is this hose suppose to be connected somewhere ? It is routed under the AC compressor don't know where it goes but this end is not connected to anything. It is not the one on driver side that dead ends with a fuel filter.


(2)- All the sudden will not shift out of 1st gear, where is the modulator valve ? This Jag is getting to me.

it connects to the pipe running on top of the radiator.

I disagree. I think it's a vacuum line, possibly to the air pump.
Is there vacuum from it when motor is running?

maybe the hose of #1 runs to the modulator of #2

The modulator is on the right side of the transmission just above the oil pan.

The vac hose for the modulator comes off the rear of the the right intake manifold

The other end of this hose runs under the AC compressor and along the center of motor towards the back of motor some where.
Has nothing to do with radiator.

Doug my cruise does not work if this is the hose for cruise where does this end connect ? thank you all.

No vacuum when idle.

If this is a vacuum hose as I suspect, it would make sense that it is attached to cruise bellows. The leak is probably big enough to alter the shift patterns.

Search under the manifold on that side for a hose hanging down or an open port. It would be easier if you remove the air cleaner cover and maybe even the whole air cleaner.

I checked around here and couldn't find anything today but I suppose it could be for the bellows and routed differently than usual.
Here is where you normally see that line

Could it be the hose that draws air through the distributor? Maybe a PO didn't like it hanging open-ended where it was and rerouted it towards the front?

Do you see a hose connected to the top of your distributor...and if you pull on it does it seem to be the same hose as in the picture?

If it is to the distributor it should have a filter on the end of it.

Right, that's the air inlet for the distributor vent. It should go to the distributor.

Another hose from the distributor goes to a nipple on the big AAV hose at the left side rear of the engine. This provides a small amount of vacuum to pull fresh air thru the distributor for venting.

The cruise control "bellows" is the rubber accordian-ish thing with a cable attached, just aft of the a/c compressor. When vacuum is applied the bellows draws inward to hold the throttle.

The blue thingy shown in one of the pics is some sort of release valve as I recall. On older XJSs I *think* they were installed as part of a recall...and then became standard issue on later cars such as yours. My '88 had one.

Tech certified? No, not me. I don't have an iota of formal technical training.

"Advanced Fumbling About" category, if one existed, might be a better fit :-)
