'84 XJS 6 cylinder 5 speed valuation?
I am trying to help a friend put a value on a one owner, 1984 XJS with the rare 6 cylinder/5 speed option. Nice car, been sitting for 1.5 years unused but will start and run at this point. Black interior is very nice, exterior black paint is fair to good with some lacquer checking, but overall the car should respond well to a good buffing/detail. Mileage unknown at this point, something I failed to get.
It is our understanding this was one of as little as 24 examples available in the US? We are open to correction and clarification from the experts.
Car will be for sale, just wondering what ballpark he is in.
Thanks
Pete

I don't know a valuation but I did work on 2 here in the Fort Worth area in the late 1980's/early 1990's. Interesting cars to say the least. The local Jaguar dealer would not touch them as they said they were "GREY-MARKET cars and were not supposed to be here". I worked for an independent shop so I had no problem with them.
I wonder whatever happened to them??????????
Good luck.

Over the years I've seen a few advertised in the $15k range but I don't know what the actual selling price was. Problem is, the ones I've seen listed have all been rather ratty.
Some grey market 6-cylinder 5-speed cars are floating around out there but Jaguar did indeed release a few (I heard it was 50?) to the USA for "market testing". Circa 1984-1985 as I recall. These were fully legitimate USA-market specification cars; entirely above board.
Cheers

You can always throw it on eBay with a reserve price to see what kind of interest it gets. I get the feeling its not as much as we would all like to think though. I immediately think of all the 96 cars with 0-15k miles that people constantly ask $15-20k for. I could only really see the paint being a real issue.
If it is as clean as you say, I would guess $12-15k, but you have to wait for the buyer since there aren't that many potential XJS buyers. So the same or a bit more than a real good XJS example. I would guess part of what it has in the 5 speed it loses by not having the V12.
