'88 XJS automatic transmission noise.
Is it possible that the road noise I hear in my '88 XJS is coming from a transmission mount that has flattened out due to age and is resting directly on the frame? The noise changes with speed, decreasing all the way down to a stop when motion is stopped. I'm currently investigating wheel bearings but I noticed in the CarFax I got with my car that the transmission mount was replaced at 25K miles, The car currently have 92K miles on it. I haven't checked to see what I have for a mount yet. Any ideas?

Hi 51 rover
It sounds (no pun intended) that it could be one of your Tyres
Where a worn out Gearbox mount would more likely make a 'Clunk'
But then again there's lots of other things that it could be and so the Tyres are one of many things

The car has 4 new Michelin tires on it but trying to cover all bases I took it to the tire ship and had them inspect them again for balance and run-out. I really think the problem is bearings and have only replaced the bearings/seals in the LR hub so far. Once the rest of the bearings for the RR hub and front wheels get here I'll be replacing them all. However, I intend to look at the transmission and engine mounts also because in previous cars I've owned I have on occasion encountered a droning sound in the drive line that led me to a metal to metal vibration caused by a mount that lost its rubber isolation bonding. thanks for the reply..
