It's a 4L60e with a gearvendors, with the very large ratio drop between gears it makes the 4L60 ideal for this. Stock 1st to 2nd in the T700 is about the same as 1st to 3rd in the T5

It will be fully automatic and will be programmed to use 2nd, 4th and 6th under light load with 7th a 0.55 overdrive. There will also be a full manual mode with modified XJS shifter to bump shift.

The low 3.06 1st plus 3.58 rear gives the same 1st gear ratio as the TH400 mated to a 4.27 diff, so should be good out of the blocks.

2nd gear (which is 1st gear in the 4L60 plus the 0.78 of the GV) gives the same as the TH400 with 3.31 diff so should still be pretty punchy off the line.

I will not have this operational until next year I need to get the car finished and on the road first.

another way for a trans. is using the new GM 6L80E, six forward gears perfectly spaced, strong HD(much stronger than 4l60e), and shifting all programable. comes with a TCM.

i drove a car with one and it was fantastic, can drive in normal mode,or click into sport mode, and click up or down the gears at will and on a roll it can shift from 6th back to 2nd instantly. you never gonna do that with a manual.

available from GM,, NEW! not used.

and for a turbo car, with automatic trans, you dont have to lift throttle, just stay on boost and you dont lose boost, with manual every time you lift to shift you could lose some boost.

I looked at that option but these trans are not easy to retrofit. There is no aftermarket TCM that will run them as yet.

I know Phillip in South Africa was looking at this for his XJS but I think he has shelved it because of the lack of support for the TCM, reading his post on the MS forums the problem is - this trans is clutch controlled get the clutch apply between changes wrong and the trans will LOCK.

The 4L60 can be built to take 600hp for under $2k, here in Aus a used 6L80 will set me back $2K before its rebuilt, and a rebuilt one about $6K. Car bits are a lot more expensive here in Aus than the USA

the 6L60e and 6L85e HD, will fit anyplace a 4L60E will fit, also if yuo do use a gear-vendor OD you will have to modify the floor pan!

The TCI 6psd is a modified 4L80e different 1st and 2nd ratio and switches the OD in to gear split. I emialed them about it and never heard back.

The 6L80 has the TCM built into the trans and is controlled by the GM PCM via the GM CAN bus. The 6L80 also will not fit i the tunnel without widening the almost the whole tunnel.

I was talking to guy here in Sydney that has a GV behind a 4L60 on a 450hp V12. He was telling me about having to widen the tran tunnel at the rear.

I was also thinking about a Merc 722.6 5 speed, but gave this up due to availability here in Aus. We do not get the parts here at the priced you guys do.

To give you an idea a 2001 Dodge Viper will set you back $140,000 here. And I have seen 1996 models selling for $90,000

I have refinished the wood, It is a very easy job. I used a heat gun to remove the old polyester finish and then used 2 pack polyurethane varnish. This was then wet sanded and buffed

After

I decided yo make a new front bumper center insert as mine was very broken, The welds worked ok but the damage was quite bad so I made a mold from it and made a new one.

The mold

The new fiberglass one in white with the original

Warrjon, just as a matter of interest here are a couple of pics of case modification to 4L80e which enables it to fit standard transmission tunnel on '89 xjr-s. I was determined not to alter anything on the car that could not easily be undone.
This will be controlled via TCI ezy TCU. TCI says 12 cyl. is not supported but with the marrelli ignition as far as the controller is concerned it is in fact a six cylinder.

I have gone a different route, I have a 4L60e already and will rebuilt it to take the power, there are now loads of options for high torque 4L60's. I am using a MegaShift to control it.

It's not easy to get hold of a 4L80 in Aus where did you get yours from?

Jagdaim Warren, It was an import I believe out of 1994 sedan.. I have since rebuilt it but could have saved myself the trouble as it turned out to be immaculate internally. Cost was $900.00

i use a GM T700, 4speed,4th is overdrive, i rebuilt it with HD parts, been in car since 1995, no problems at all.

i can shift up and down gears , i also use a light weight 10" convertor, also light weight flex plate, but its not a hi-stall, stall is about factory.

the light weight gives me all most instant engine reponse, much of my engine has light weight rotating components.

This is good info, and the route I am planning, I already have the 4L60e (T700).

where did you get the lightweight flex plate from?

warron , if you look at my turbo post in xjs, it shows my front engine pulley!

it not heavy cast iron, its custom made out of aluminum, pulley weighs 1 lb, along with a genuine Viper power steering pump, pump weighs 4lb.

let me remember here , gear reduction starter weighs 8lb, alternator weighs 7lbs. Hitachi.

sorry cant remember many other weight savings, my 1978 Jag XJS weighs in on an actual calibrated digital scale at 3360 lbs ,1/2 tank fuel, no driver.

dont forget for every 100lbs reduced you gain around .1 tenth second to 60mph(roughly), on a 3900 lb car, of course its gets better as weight comes off!

Thanks Ron.

I already have the reduction gear starter, the weight difference was significant to old Lucas unit and much easier to install.

I like the idea of the Alloy pulleys I'll do this with the new engine.

I have also removed the front lower sill panels (TWR left these on with the XJR-s) as I have TWR fiberglass bumper to go on, the total weight saving here is around 10kg (22lbs)
