92 XJS pics
Just thought I’d share a couple of pics of a car I’ve been working on, with some of you helping me on other posts with questions to finish my repairs.
1992 XJS, Flamenco Red metallic and light tan (I think that’s doeskin ?) interior.
I didn’t need another project but a friend sent me the Craigslist ad earlier this year and I couldn’t resist. Why? Because the car had 24k miles…
It’s always a gamble on a car like this and while this car definitely drove like 24k miles, it needed a lot. Including paint and interior work.
But then once I got it home I discovered that the same sun that beat the paint up, also cooked various plastics. For example, the trip computer fell apart when removed and the rear seat belt housings felt like they were made of tortilla shells.
And while the body was rust free, the front subframe, while solid. Looked bad from surface rust.
so what was supposed to be a very easy and SYMPATHETIC restoration of a few things turned into a bigger project. And once you take a car apart, it never goes back together perfectly. So while I thought it coulda been a $30k car, not anymore.
But it’s still remarkable to drive one of these cars with such low miles. The ease and refinement is something else.
it will be for sale soon, lemme know what you think it’s worth.
(that 996 turbo is also about to be for sale). The title of that pic is “red and RED!”

I am just on the strip out at the moment but cleaning and repairing as I go. I was really impressed by the quality of the carpets as they have cleaned up really well. I bought a shop vacuum that can suck up liquids, so it all took no time at all.
Inside the car it all looked pretty good, it wasn't until I started to remove things that I notices the just how dirty it was. I should have taken a picture before I started, but always forget.
Just what to do about my veneer, the dash and door capping is quite good however, sun bleached in places, but the sky slope is like a dry lake bed, it is all there but all cracked. The windscreen has clearly leaked at some point and damaged seems to have localised to the sky slope. It will need replacing, but do I match its colour to the current lighter colour of the existing trim or do I go original darker walnut and restore the rest of the trim.. Maybe I should start a thread before I hijack this one
