Default 94 XJS Convert Top Quit

Went to get the convert out of storage and all went as usual, except...

For some reason, when I went to retract the top, nothing? I do not hear a motor, just silence. It worked fine when we put it away last fall. I checked the 30 amp fuse and that looks good? Is there another fuse besides the pump fuse that might be the culprit?

Any good advise?
a. Switch bad?
b. Switch at handbrake?
c. Relay?

Not sure where to start. I appreciate any input!

Mark,

If the rear windows don't go down, then it is very likely that teh hood ecu is not seeing the 3 things that it needs ie

- ignition in Pos II
-Transmission in Park or Neutral
- Handbrake on.

Of these, it's nearly always the handbrake switch. Try just pulling on one more notch before looking any further.

Good luck

Paul

Are the windows going down?

If not, it's extremely unlikely that all the relays have failed (2 x down windows & 1 x down hood), so it still sounds to me like the handbrake switch. Disconnect the switch wires and bridge them then you can eliminate that.

Good luck

Paul

Back windows do not go down. Nothing is happening. Where are the wires for the switch on the Handbrake? Thanks again for all your help!

On the handbrake lever. Undo the little screw that holds the side cover plate on and you can access the switch wires

Well, got the cover off, jumped the switch, nothing. Cleaned the switch with cleaner and replaced cover. Still no luck. Bummer! Any other suggestions?

Did you dismantle the hood activation switch and clean it out? Mine was full of crud so i cleaned it and reassembled, worked like a charm.

If you've got no windows going down or the hood activating AND you know the handbrake switch isn't at fault, then I would suggest the following:

It seems that either the hood ecu isn't getting the 3 signals that it needs:
- ignition in Pos II
- gearbox in Park or Neutral
- handbrake on

or the ecu isn't providing the output signals.

So, if you look at your wiring diagram in the Parts & Service Manual, you'll see the pinout of the ecu. Put a multi-meter probe on the backside of the plug pins and check for the 3 input signals. Then if you positively see the 3 base signals, check that the hood switch is then also passing a signal. If you're still seeing all ok, then check the output pin signals. This way, you'll logically check all the input and output and should start to identify the fault.

Good luck

I know you said you checked and cleaned it, but when you pull on your handbrake, does your parking brake light on the dash come on? That's an easy way to make sure the handbrake switch is working. If it works to make the light come on then it works enough to make the top work and you can move on.
