Hi Bob95XJS
This may or may not help you but I also have a 1995 XJS where when I changed the Battery the Speedo took on a life of its own and flicked itself right round the dial to the maximum Speed, where the only way to Correct it was to take the Instrument Binnacle out of the Car and then revolve the Binnacle, so that the Speedo Needle fell back into place
Where in the process of doing so you have to remove Two Multiplugs from the Back of the Instrument Binnacle
This in itself does not solve your problem but it hopefully gives clear instructions of how you remove the Instrument Binnacle if you need to, which is an absolute 'Walk in the Park' that should only take 10 Mins though do be sure to disconnect the Battery and also make sure that you don't damage the Printed Circuit that is on the Back

OK so now we fast forward to a Speedo problem that I had with my V12 XJS where the Speedo Suddenly Stopped Working where once again I had to take the Instrument Binnacle right out of the Car which is the Same procedure as doing so on my 1995 XJS (which apparently the GF did with just a little bit of help from me!)
Where once again the Two Multiplugs on the Back of the Instrument Binnacle had to be Removed (just a very simple un-plug job) only this time they were the reason that the Speedo didn't work, as there was some Corrosion on the Multiplug Pins, which took some Meticulous Cleaning (Lemon Juice) before we put those Multiplugs back in and then put the Instrument Binnacle back in the Car
Where after doing exactly that, the Speedo was Working again!
Another very easy job apart from the Meticulous amount of Cleaning of those Multiplugs before putting them back

Which either may or may not be the Cure for the problem you have Though if you decide to go that route then at least you will know how to do it, as although this worked for me it may not work for you and Paul (ptjs) may even come up with a better idea that I haven't thought of, as he is a bit of an expert when it comes down to the Sensors that may affect the workings of this stuff
