Default 96 XJS 4L Aftermarket O2 sensors

To all,

Has anybody had any experience with aftermarket low cost O2 sensors. Sorry for trying to cheap out but looking for alternatives solutions instead of breaking the bank!!!!

If you have brand or part #’s, it is appreciated

Thanks

Paul,

In the UK, we only had front sensors on our AJ16 engines. They are the titania ones made by NTK. Jaguar part number is LHE1682AA. I think that was the standard part number for most markets. Jaguar price is now £500+ each

When I've replaced mine, I've bought them from www,gendan.co.uk Each time, they have sent me ones made by NTK so I'm guessing they are OEM. I've just checked their price today and its £54. I can't guarantee that they are still NTK ones, maybe worth giving them a ring to check?

I think the rear ones on US cars are LHE1682BA. I don't think Gendan sell an equivalent of that.

Cheers

Paul

I have fitted these in my X300 4.0 for ten years and last year four in my XJS 4.0(US car). Fantastic.

Can I assume that if an O2 sensor works on a 1995 XJS 4.0L it will work on a 1996?

Forgot to ask if both upstream and down stream sensors are the same on the 96 xjs, 4.0L

Yes and yes.

The downstream ones are the ones that provide the valuable data to the ECU. The upstream are checks. Still important, but not as valuable.

They are different part numbers, but I'm sure US owners will know if the sensor is fundamentally the same.

Vee,

It must be the other way around? Most markets don't have downstream sensors so the key fuelling trim info is coming from the front sensors.

True, but the X300 and XJS with AJ16 engine in Europe only have downstream sensors (strange, but it is). When upstream, these are for checks.

Keesh & Vee,

Apols. I thought the US "downstream" sensors were after the "underfloor cat".

So, I agree, in the UK, we only have "downstream" sensors mounted just after the downpipe cat, which are naturally doing the major sensing.

I'm not really sure, therefore, what the US "upstream" sensors in the manifolds are doing? Doesn't it make more sense to just check the exhaust gases after the cat has done its work and then adjust fuelling accordingly. Is there any real point in checking before the cat and also after the cat?

Cheers

They both do the same thing, measure oxygen content, there should be no difference in the upstream and downstream sensor readings, if there is then the catalytic converter is broken. So it doesn't matter where they are placed.

To All,

has anyone else purchased an aftermarket O2 sensor for their 95/96 XJS.

if so, what was the part # and or brand and how much?

I have not been able to find the other units mentioned earlier in this thread.

these were for parts probably across a number of car lines including other ford products.

I purchased 4 O2 sensors that were supposedly for my car but upon opening the box the connector end was incorrect.

Not sure what Iam doing wrong and why I am having so much difficulty finding theses items.

Thanks

Paul,

I just rang www.gendan.co.uk for you.

They said that, although they don't have LHE 1682AA in stock, they can get them in within 3 days. I also asked if they were NTK items as previously sold to me. He said that if you send an email to sales@gendan.co.uk and ask the question, they will verify with the supplier if they are from NTK.

Hope that helps

Paul

Paul,

Thank you for the above and beyond call of duty.

I am hoping that some of my USA peers will give up their secrets on O2 sensor low cost replacement.

I thank you and will keep this info should it become necessary to purchase over seas.

Back in those days when Jaguar was owned by Ford Motor Co. there must have been O2 sensors that went across multiple lines of vehicles.

I am hoping this effort might uncover some of this information.

Thanks

Softball60#/Paul

I often wonder whether any 4-wire titania sensor would work if you just replaced the pigtail?

I suppose threading would have to be confirmed? Perhaps someone can record the threading and how deep the sensor goes into the pipe? If those dimensions line up, I would think it should work?

Vee,

thank you for the input. Good info. I am hoping to find something that can just plug in.

any part #’s for O2 sensors purchased that will work on a 96 XJS are appreciated.

Also seems to be a shortage of available parts.

Thanks

Thanks Keesh,

To all thanks for the responses.

I will be honest with you……You probably think I am unable to do this work myself!!!!

What I was hoping for was a possible response from someone saying….”hey I just installed a sensor from a Ford and it works and it only cost $10……..IKNOW………I KNOW.

JUST WISHFUL THINKING!!!!

this effort was similar to my post a year or two ago asking the same thing about a TPS….WHY ARE BASICALLY THE SAME PART FOR SOME VEHICLES A FEW DOLLARS BUT WHEN YOU ASK FOR A JAGAUR PART IT’S HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS………..BRAND DEMANDS!!!

Again thanks for all the support this site gives it’s followers.
