Default Adding and electric fan to assist the AC.

Hey guys! I want to add a fan on the 1994 XJS in order to assist the AC in stop and go traffic. Has anyone added a unit with improvement to the AC performance?

If your 94 is a AJ6 , it should already have an electric pusher fan. I personally ditched the OEM electric fan and replaced it with 2 Spal pusher fans. They help A/C performance considerably.

It’s located on the left hand side in front of the condenser(if you are facing the car)......it never comes on because the switch to power it is set to come on at an irrationally high temperature. There is a modification available for you to run it along with your A/C or you can get a lower temperature fan switch. I have done both. And also, as I mentioned above, replaced the 1 stock pusher with 2 Spal pushers.

You can also just wire it up directly, which is what I did with a nice metal toggle switch, helps on hot slow traffic or as a cool down fan.

I was thinking that would be my best option. How did you wire yours?

Adjustable thermo switch

It can handle up to 20 A, no additional relay needed.
There also are DIY weatherproof boxes you can buy. Cost a few bucks from Amazon.
Edit: You can secure the sensor to the radiator return hose, then if the coolant is too hot after passing thru radiator additional fan kicks in.

My first attempt at controlling the aux fan was the toggle switch in the cabin. I use to leave it on and drain the battery sometimes. I would have to remember to turn it on. The lower temp switch is really a much better solution IMO. I probably went way too low with my Wahler 6010.82 switch, since it comes on at 180 and shuts down at 170, so it typically leaves the fans running for a while after shut down in this 104 degree heat after a long drive, but I like it that way. I also have a couple of NOS Wahler switches 6010.88 that turn the fan on at 190 and shut it at 180 if I ever choose to do that.

I bypassed the junk thermal switch on the water pump, the great minds of the forum told me bridging the two wires with a paper clip or wire bit will activate power and thus test the fan...my fan worked so I simply stole borrowed several feet of wire from work and wired a toggle switch into a vacant space near the ignition, took abit of fishing and panel removal, but quite useful in gridlock or when parking briefly on hot days.

A 10 minute shutdown timer would be nice but I wasn't that concerned. Recently did a rad recore and it runs so cold I store my ice cream in the engine bay.

Its 10pm here I'll take pics tmrw. Remind me if I don't get back to you on this.

This sounds like a good idea too. Im barely getting to know the car, so Im curious to know how the lower temp switch gets installed

Youll see a two pronged plug about middle of the waterpump area itll stick out with 2 stringly crispy wires coming off, thats your temp switch you just unscrew the old one and swap if replacing with a lower temp unit.

I cant see any wires near the water pump area. I do see the similar sensor on the left top of the radiator though, it has two wires coming off it, I jumped the two wires and my fan worked! So my question now is... can I jump the two wires on my way home or do I risk overheating the harness?

You can just change the sensor for lower temperature one and modify your connector. That is the easiest, cleanest solution to the problem

This is a V12 right? Your sig doesnt list engine type, Take a picture of the area maybe someone simply unplugged it. Regardless there has to be a plug interfacing with coolant somewhere front of engine.

Im using the mobile version, so I never see my car listed on my sig. I will make the change. Sorry for the confusion, I have the 4.0 AJ6. I ordered a new sensor, and will do the install on the weekend. I drive home today with the fan jumped on, and it was fine. I did notice that my AC was performing better, and engine cooling was not creeping past the N on my gauge with the AC on. Thanks for the help!

There’s also a way to wire the fan so that it always comes on when the AC is on.

It still works as intended, whatever that is, but will also come on when the air conditioning is on.

Do have a link? Or specs on the Spal fans you installed? My factory fan seems to make noises and failure is on the horizon, I can see it coming. i got everything working as intended now, with the exception of occasional fan noise. Which leads me to believe that the amount of air being pushed is probably not enough.

Your A/C system works on pressure in the Freon not the temperature of your engine. You already have an engine temperature thermo switch that controls an AUX fan which helps cool the engine Not the Freon A/C. Adding another fan has no bearing on the A/C temp settings. The higher ambient temperature around your vehicle is what causes the A/C to work harder and you have no control of that.
