Default Air con/heating air flow motors

I have intermittent air flow in my 1993 4lt convertible XJS. I know this is caused by the two motors which control the air flow between cold and hot to the air vents. I am also aware that one is behind the binnacle and one is above the drivers feet area. As a result of this forum I can now easily remove the binnacle but I wondered if anyone knows how to remove the motors or another quick fix. I am trying to avoid an expensive dash removal.

The blower motors are held up to slots in the space under the scuttle, each side of the wiper grille. You only have to remove the lower dash knee trim to get at them. Both are secured in the same way and in the same equivalent space. You will see, if you look carefully with a bright light, two metal struts coming down from the scuttle holding the blower units (one each side of each unit) which are secured to the struts with small bolts (1/2 or 7/16th A/F). Undo the bolts, also remove anything in the way such as small fuse panels etc etc. The units will not move, you must then do TWO things:
  • Pull open the bottom flap on the motor and wedge it WIDE open - this allows the unit to be removed from the scuttle, if the flap is not opened the closed flap stops the unit coming out.
  • Then using all your strength, pull, slightly rock, etc etc, the unit until is does come out. You will think it will never come out, but it will. The rubber seal between the unit and the body forms a magnificently strong bond after 25 years!

It will, the electronics are different on your blowers (which are part of the Delanair Mark III aircon system used on later cars), but mechanically and fixing-wise they are the same as earlier Delanair Mark II ones, such as on my car.

The good news is the motors are easy to rehab.
Most of the time you'll find the problem is only a leaf or dirt build up holding the motor from moving.
Good time to renew the brushes and lube the bearings.
When You are done you'll think the fans aren't running from being so quiet.
