The check valves in the fill ports can often leak, they unscrew from the metal lines. It's a standard part.
I assume you were not using a gauge manifold that shows both high and low pressure sides at the same time? If you're doing AC work, it's well worth investing in those.
For the current problem you'll just have to check systematically until you find what ruptured. Could be a hose or a crimp, or the connection to the evaporator. At this point I'd probably want to take everything apart and replace all the O rings in the joints.
