Airconditioning
The guy I bought my 92' XJS V12 from told me the A/C wasn't working and believed it was due to a leak in one of the hoses. As the hoses are relatively inexpensive, I went ahead and got the two hoses to replace. The A/C blows hot/ambient air regardless of setting, so it seems there was a leak after all, and hopefully it was one of the hoses. Now, should I assume that the R12 has been converted to R134a do to the age of the car? Is there a way to verify this?

Don't assume anything.
I recommend removing the compressor and draining the oil from it. There is a small plug screw on the bottom. Capacity is about 10-11oz's. R12 was discontinued in '93 IIRC. Replace the oil with PAG134 oil available at any auto parts store. Reinstall the compressor and then find someone who can evacuate the entire system for you. An hour on the vacuum machine should do the trick. Assuming the hoses are all good and the seals are tight go ahead and re-charge the system through the correct port. System holds about 2 1/4lbs IIRC. You can do this yourself. I would add a leak detector dye (orange/yellow-green) as well in case to identify any future problems. My 2 cents.
