AJ16 Oil Cooler Hoses and Oil Cooler Bypass

AJ16 Oil Cooler Hoses and Oil Cooler Bypass
I'm going through a major overhaul of my '95 4.0 convertible. I've just cleaned and resealed the oil filter adapter. The hoses themselves look to be in very good condition and I reinstalled them. I do have a EBC4124 oil cooler bypass that I was going to install in my '90 Majestic, but now I'm thinking about installing it in my XJS instead. Any thoughts, opinions are greatly appreciated.

Roger,
There is a lot of discussion here in the UK as to whether the oil cooler is really necessary in AJ16 XJSs, particularly as Jaguar didn't fit it in x300 AJ16 saloons.
With the unavailability of the oil cooler hoses now, what a lot of owners do is run the car until an oil pipe goes and then fit the saloon bypass kit. I have one in my parts bin ready for that very day! If I were you, I would do just that - run as standard until the oil cooler or pipe lets go, then fit the bypass kit.
Good luck
Paul

Thanks, it's done. I installed the bypass kit I have this afternoon. I'll buy a second kit to fit to my Majestic. I'll remove the cooler from the car tomorrow. Don't know if I'll chuck in the trash or not. It's in excellent shape - no signs of corrosion but in fact it is 21 years old with 107749 miles of wear on it. The hoses all looked good and so forth but they are also 21 (25 on the Majestic) years old.

I was going to put the oil cooler on my 95 x300 6cyl a few years back. My way of thinking is the AJ16 holds around 9qts of oil and I drive it in normal ways & not in that type of hot environment. In other words I think its over kill, unless you live in Death Valley heat. Then cold weather is a factor also running without a oil thermostat.
BTY, my idea was to adapt/weld AN fitting to the oil engine cooler adapter then run braided stainless lines to the cooler. Probably a lot cheaper & easier than ordering from Jaguar.

Roger95,
You may already know this, but go careful when trying to remove the cooler. I've never seen anyone take a cooler out of an XJS intact. The reaction between the pipe ends and the cooler pipe bosses mean that the cooler gets destroyed when undoing the pipes.
However, I'd love to hear that you're the first guy to do it intact!
Good luck

I'll do my best. The oil cooler hoses from the pipes to the filter adapter are in very good/excellent shape. No corrosion, the plating on all of the fittings is clean and bright (life in Florida). The rubber isolated bolts pn CAC8478 have separated so there is nothing to support the joints in the pipes and hoses unless they're replaced. I took a good hard look at the oily, greasy mess I found and considering the potential for future problems with an oil cooler assembly that was ultimately replaced by the EBC4124 bypass (that I had) it was a no brainer.
BTW aftermarket part numbers are MTC7833 for the bypass and MTC7834 for the two connectors.

I was able to easily (!) remove one cooler pipe. The second is a different story, however. I won't use a torch on it so I'm going to cut the pipe off at the cooler connection.
The cooler itself appears to be in very good condition - no leaks. I will post pictures of all of the parts removed when I'm finished. If anyone wants what I remove I'll let them have it for the cost of shipping, otherwise it will be chucked in the trash.
