Default All I want for Christmas is another XJS ...

... and a heater for the dog house I will be living in. :-)

I don't even like V8 conversions. But this one is intriguing. Just the paint and interior cost more than the seller wants for the whole car.

Does anyone know a good source for doghouse heaters? :-)

There's how to make 500 HP and 500 Ft lbs . Looks like one great deal if add's all true.

car seems cheap, divorce is a bit pricey though

They always say 'It is cheaper to keep her.' I did the math and found that not to be true. ;-) If I buy a Jag with a V8 I am more worried about my wife stealing and claiming it. But then, that would be a great way to get her addicted to Jags.

The ‘71 402 made 300hp but 10K on new heads, higher compression, cam, manifold, carb, extractors, exhaust and labor would get you to 500hp assuming the rest of this 45 year old engine is in good condition. After choosing to go with a big block I wonder why they didn’t start with a 454 or bigger. The gearbox might need attention too. Sounds like a great project.

I go to quite a few car shows every year with a group of friends and I noticed something- the majority of the older cars that I look at have had their engines replaced along with transmissions etc. Heck for that matter a good deal of them have had the interiors updated including dash clusters, a/c added and center consoles added. Take one of the most iconic Chevrolet's ever built that being the '55 to '57 and very very few are stock.

Just not clear what the hang up is with putting a high HP V8 that is easier to maintain into a XJS if that is what you like. I never hear people say that is a awesome '55 Chevy but they really screwed it up by updating all the running gear.

Would we prefer that a XJS sit next to someones house under a cover because the old V12 is too costly etc. to get running or see the car out being driven with a motor transplant ? I can assure you that the person driving the XJS with a newer V8 could care less what is under the hood as all they know is they are out enjoying their car.

I am a purists in the sense that all my vehicles are original equipment and I always enjoy looking at vehicles that have been kept in original condition (nothing better looking IMOP than a XK engine sitting in a E-type or even a V12 because the bonnet lifted up and you could see it). But, I honestly never thought the V12 looked that great in the XJS as it looked too crowded and covered in pipes, hoses etc.

Ok, in the spirit of the holidays all you V12 guys go easy on me. I am not trying to stir things up but just sharing some perspective on this topic. Did you ever consider that there is a very small group of people in this world who really know how to keep the Jaguar V12 running in the XJS and the majority of that group is on forums like this.

When I see a XJS out being driven which is a very rare sight in Idaho, I am just beside myself with pride and joy to see the big cat out stretching it's legs that I could care less what engine is being used to get it down the road!

That 402 .060 over probably started out as a 396. There were many versions of the 396,some high HP performance versions and many more pedestrian low HP variants. So who know what it is. Probably lo-po as the high performance 396's were always coveted.

In any case it's a short stroke big block, this car needs a set of AFR heads and a T56 6 speed so it can breath and rev and cruise. The more rev'y short stroke Big Blocks are a joy to row. The AFR Alu heads would drop 120Lbs over the nose and T56 would drop another 100Lbs in the center. This way it would be a super fun, capable and comfortable GT. Someone buy this and send it to me for re-doing. It's kinda easy to put a manual in these early cars and bang'ing off 6500 RPM BB shifts can be thrilling.

I love those early embossed door panels too. That was a nice detail.

Ad says ‘71 so it would be 300hp gross 260hp net at less than 5000rpm 402.

I wish AFR made heads for the V12😀.

I too agree that the v-12 in the XJS looks a bit crowded. I like the looks of the 6 better, but the older 6 with carbs looks the greatest to me.

One old tail claims that engineers purposely made the XJS engine compartment extra tight so Land Rover engines would not fit.

That 'tale' actually adheres to the XJ40, which is why it was only sold as an XJ6 until 1993 until the XJ81 was ready with a fully modified front end. The XJ-S was never made with a V8 threat. If a V12 will fit, a V8 will easily fit.

Ot was also a reference to the Rover V8, which started life as Buick 215 until Buick crushed the plans and sold the design to Rover (not Land Rover, as the first cars with the new V8 was thr Rover P5B, B to give a hint at Buick). The Defender and Range Rover received it later... Land Rovers always used inline 4 cylinders jntil the V8 arrived later on

FYI there was a 6 cylinder Land Rover made also, pre-V8 era, though not in large volume. I have seen one.

Was it the same 3.0l unit as the P5 had at first? Gutless and greedy?

Funny thing is, it doesn't have to be that way! All the weak spots and quirks...and the fixes....are well documented. But, still, running a V12 isn't for everybody. You have to be a DIYer, you have to love doing it. You have to get in the spirit of things....or you're sunk!

No it was a Rover car company engine as used in some of their ancient 1950s saloons, I believe. It was only fitted to the 109 inch wheelbase station wagon version.

Doug, this is SO true. All owners should frame this quotation and hang it over their garage door. People SO forget this truth and start blaming the car, Lucas, Jaguar engineers etc etc, instead of just taking the trouble to understand the thing and making it reliable.

Damn right Greg.

They forget 30 years of neglect, and expect the near impossible without opening the wallet.

A lad here did that to me one day when I was in a less than polite mood, mainly with him.

Him: Should have kept my Corvette.

Me: Yes you should hove, cause you have NO respect for the V12 at all.

Him: Want the car?.

Me: Nope, but I will take pity on the CAR, not you, and drive it away, which I did. 600kms sweet as a nut.

It was a PreHE XJS, running on 10 cylinders, rough looking, but tidied up well, and I moved it on, and that new person still runs it as a DD.
