To say it "could" rub is misleading - it will rub under "heavy" suspension travel. As per Bernard's article, "full" suspension travel is not required, but only "heavy" suspension travel is required. I distinguish that from full travel because he uses full travel when describing the better fitment at 28mm of offset.
So yea, you can use a 17x8 20mm offset wheel on the rear of your XJS, but with a 235/50-17 tire, it is going to rub under heavy suspension travel. In a nutshell, that's what he says. Nothing more and nothing less.

I would definitely agree with you that they will almost definitely rub the inner fender liner under "heavy" travel if Northern buys the same tire brand as Bernard. But as I pointed out earlier, this isn't as serious an issue as actually impacting or rubbing the painted outer fender edge.

Keep in mind Northern, that we are only talking millimeters here so you may not have to change the tires drastically to get clearance. I would mount the wheels (one front, one back) just to get an idea of how much room for bulge. If it is real close, you can buy a tire that would be the same width as the rim. If you absolutely had to, you could take
2mm out of the lip with a wizzer wheel & nobady would ever be able to tell, just make sure to paint the bare edge

AFAIK these wheels started life on a DB7 - they are 18 inch Speedline Mistrals & I think they are 8 inches wide. I've never been able to confirm the exact offset of the wheels & I first tried 245/40/18s on them & there was a lot of fouling on the rear wheelarch inner edges, so I tried 235/40/18s & they still fouled the rear arch inner edges - they are now fine with 225/40/18s.

These are tried and true. They offer great ultimate grip. They ride great and are reasonably quiet but don't have the razor-edge response of some other performance-oriented tires... you really trade a lot of noise and ride quality for a little steering response. I don't own a set but by brother does, and I love them. I would have them on my car if they came in my size.

I have these and they're excellent. Not all that performance oriented (only rated to 149mph) but they are extremely consistent and predictable when approaching the limit, even with a short sidewall. (My car also has 18" wheels.) They also wear very well and are reasonably quiet.

This is just the tip of the iceberg..
So much of this depends on what you want out of the tire... do you want something quiet? How much tread noise or ride comfort are you willing to give up for performance? Does it need to go in the snow? Etc...
Tires cab be tough to buy. When you go out to buy shoes, you can put them on and walk around to see how they feel, and then take them off and try a new pair. With tires, you make the investment and you're pretty much stuck with them until they wear out. You don't really know how they feel until after you pay for them. Choose wisely - few things make such a big difference with how your car drives!

Mish Mish. I love the matte black rims (wheels) on your car. I've been thinking about painting mine. Now that I see yours, my mind has been made up. Not that I don't think that the original chrome doesn't look good, but I think that you can go two ways with an XJS: stately/refined Sunday cruiser, or mean, bad-assed, sporty hell on wheels. I wanna go for hell on wheels.

TWR 16x8 wheels had 19mm and 33mm front rear offset so should be ok
