Automatic transmission fluid

I am new to the Jaguar scene but have endured the oddities of having a Triumph in the 70's, and know that British autos can have some different ways to approach things. My question is simple, at least this one is. I purchased my 93 coupe (4.0 with 4 speed auto) from a local indie dealer. I have put about 1000 miles on it since I bought it about 9 months ago. it drives like a dream. When I purchased it from the repair shop the fellow said all of the levels were topped off and all was good. Well, I believed him, and the car is driving and shifting great, even better in sport mode, but when I went to check the transmission fluid with the engine running it was not showing on the dipstick. With the engine off the fluid is right between the two marks. Am I missing something in that the transmission fluid is really low, or for some reason is it checked with the engine off? Assuming I will need to add some fluid what type do I use in that the called for fluid is not on any shelves that I can find. (I have tried searching but I was not able to find what I was looking for on the forum)
Thanks for any help on this seemingly minor thing

You are spot on with the checking with the trans AT operating temp (about 15 miles of driving should do), leave the engine running, and check the level.
If it is low, and it sounds like it is, top it up with Dexron 3. Your ZF 4HP24 will be very happy with a full level.
Now, I am down here, and we have lots of different stuff to you guys.
Most of our Auto Trans Fluids are now "Multi Vehicle" and cover a very broad range of specifications, dependant on Brand.
We have Mineral, Semi Synthetic, Full Synthetic.
I run Full Synthetic in both the ZF transmissioned Jags, and have done so for years with
no issues whatsoever.
In fact ALL my Jags have run Full Synthetic Trans Fluid for as long as I can remember, and as said, NO issues at all.
