Default Black Fan or Yellow Fan, which one is best?

I need a new Fan for my XJS

Which is showing signs of Cracking.

The Yellow OEM ones are expensive but the Black After-Market ones are about half price.

But which one is the best one?

Are they made of the same Material?

I have heard the Black ones are better but all the same would like to know what you would recommend.

Don't know if correct but my memory is that black plastic fan is more robust.

It is available new from Jaguar for £145 plus tax which seems very expensive, until compared to the cost of replaced a damaged radiator and / or bonnet if a fan disintegrated at high rpm

Part no. EBC4553 | Cooling fan parts from Jaguar Classic Parts UK

The originals were white, not yellow. The colour changed as the plastic aged. Black is the later fan, has more blades and deeper blades, so will move more air. The white part numbers have superseded to the black fan now.

It should be available cheaper at places like SNG Barratt than from Jaguar. While you are in there, it's a good idea to change the fan clutch too if it's original.

Hi

Thanks for replying

The Black Fans seem to have the same number of Blades but £145 does seem very expensive as you say.

Hi JB

The Black fans seem to have the same number of Blades, as the Yellow/White ones and there are plenty about around £40

But as for the Clutch the Cheapest I've found so far.... is £70 unless anyone can do better but in the States those Clutches are as Cheap as Chips.

Black is the latest spec.

Prices will vary as you know.

These prices are what has led HEAPS of us to E Fans. It is usually cheaper in the long run, and the peace of mind is priceless.

Hi Grant

I will have to stay with the 'Black Fan' idea for the moment but may get into it later on, when I've got more time to sort it out.

Let us know how you get on and how you did it, if you decide that you are going electric.

Ditto:

Not that it makes any difference, but I'd guess 145 pounds is about
300 bucks. That would buy a more than decent E fan set here.

Years ago, a business associate gave up on his XJS. He had a new black fan and clutch. No longer needed. He gave t to me. But, alas
my 4.2 bit the dust big time.

so, I was selling off left over bits. I got a bite for the fan. but, I decided to clean it up a bit before shipping it. Yellow as yours. Wow, cracked far worse than yours. Nope, not fair to send it to the buyer.
I tossed it so as to never cause anyone any issues. Sent the new black one !!! Joker. I trusted him to pay, he didn't!!!! So, after I cooled down, I let him knw what I thought of him and moved on....

My Lump has e fans. controlled by the PCM. More than pleased.....

OB,

My suggestion? Go to David Manners and buy an OEM black fan and an OEM clutch. Manners often give you three options on a part such as this. They use a code on all their parts which means either:

Genuine Jaguar - (but then it's cheaper to buy it direct from Jaguar anyway!)
OEM - sourced from the manufacturer of the parts that are made for Jaguar
Replacement - Could be from anywhere and made to whatever spec they want

OEM bought through a genuine company such as Manners should be the most cost-effective in this particular situation. There are plenty of people on ebay stating "OEM" but it could mean anything in terms of quality!

Just my opinion....

OB,

OEM fan is about £45, clutch about £70, I think. That's not too bad is it?

No that's Not Bad, that's Good!!!! (Cheers for that!)

But is the OEM Fan, made of the Same Material as the Black ones?

I thought the OEM one's were 'White/Yellow' or have they come up with something new?

Hi Paul

There are a number of options here, and as such I'm not sure which one I need?

OB,

As I understand it, jaguar only provide the black fans now. A call to Jaguar Classic Parts will confirm.

So, if that's true,EBC4553 is always a black fan now. Manners do 3 options.

EBC4553 is a jaguar-provided fan. Mannets buy it from Jaguar just like you can, and sell it at full price. If you want that one, buy it direct from Jaguar rather than Manners.
EBC4553# should be exactly the same fan, but Manners have bought it direct from the manufacturer that make it for Jaguar. Much cheaper.
EBC4553* is a fan made by someone else and bought in by Manners It's supposed to be a suitable replacement but it won't necessarily be the same quality or meet Jaguars exact manufacturing tolerances. Even cheaper.

Hope that explains it!

Paul

My Head is Spinning Faster than the Fan!

Probably best if I give them a ring but thanks for your help.

OB
As PTJS says, Manners non-Jaguar but made by the Jaguar supplier (option 2 in his lists above) is what I always buy. Cannot go wrong. I know the viscous unit is a bit steep, but do NOT economise on this item. No point in a lovely new fan blade that is only semi-connected to its drive!
