blower motors

blower motors
New problem (one of many) developing on my recently (3 days ago) purchased 1996 xjs convertible. Turned on the AC. When I turned the engine off and removed the key the blower motors continued to run. Had to disconnect the battery to prevent battery loss. The Jag dealer claims the relays are bad. The horror story is that they are internal to the motors (according to the service manager) and the only fix is to replace them at $800.00 a piece plus labor. Figure $2500.00 out the door. The problem was not evident when I inspected the car for purchase as I would have heard the blower motors running. As this is my first Jag experience I am wondering if there is a shut down procedure I am not aware of. If this is not the case, before I spend $2500.00 I don,t have I'm thinking of putting a toggle switch in the circuit and mount it under the dash by the steering column so I can turn the system off. At this time I am loosening the negative connection at the battery when I park the car. Living in Florida I cant remove the fuses as I would have no AC function. Ideas and suggestions appreciated.

I'm not sure if this would apply to a '96 but on the older XJS with the same problem here's the fix:

Only runs about $10-15 in parts but there's still the (back breaking) labor to remove the offending blower motor(s)....which was probably the most miserable job I've ever done on a Jag, personally.
Considering the amount of money involved it might merit some research to see if a similar repair can be done on the later models.
Cheers
