when taking apart my xjs for complete rebuild!
i found this rear sway bar on it!
some guys who were racing some xjs said dont use it saying car would handle badly!
it went into scrape heap! gone.
so now i'm having wiggling/fishtailing, maybe i should have put it back on??
also pic of my front bar 1" inch diameter, it may be contributing my waggin *** end!
sorry upside down pic.

Good plan.
Over many years, and many cars, I've had good results with:
- Adding a rear sway bar
- Increasing the size of the front bar
- Don't mess with spring rates
- High quality shocks
- Proper rim width for tires
On real-word roads I've always found happiness with that formula
Cheers

Hmmm. I wonder what it was from? From what I can see it doesn't look original.

Over the years a story has been floated from time-to-time that Jaguar stopped using the rear bar because 'track testing' proved the car gave faster lap times without it.
I dunno if that's true or not.... but the immediate come-back is (as always, and correctly) "What works best on the track doesn't always work best on the street"
so now i'm having wiggling/fishtailing, maybe i should have put it back on??

No, that's not it. A rear bar will reduce under-steer and, if anything, will make the car *more* tail-happy if driven aggressively....doubly so if you go too large.

Doug, That looks like a standard Jaguar rear bar to me.
Ron, I do not think the absence of a roll bar will affect the suspension on takeoff on a straight road - if this is what you are getting. More likely you have some play in (in order of likelihood)

- the outer lower wishbone fulcrums
- inner lower wishbone fulcrums
- hub bearings or driveshaft UJs
- springs/shocks going home a touch
- tyres ditto
- diff LSD
- play in your home-designed axle locators

I’ve just ordered the same from my local car spares. Cost for the six £210. So more or less the same price.

I was told if you add a rear anti-sway bar to your XJS you need to up size the front bar in order to keep the same under steer handling. Without doing so you will change the handling to over steer which is less desirable. There is a good handling article on ADDCO's web site.
That's the usual and safest advice applicable to most any front engine/rear drive street driven car.
And don't go too big on the rear bar. I did, regretted it, went back to a smaller rear bar. I recall that Jaguar used two sizes on the rear bar...12mm and 14mm or something like that. Those are about right and should give most anyone the improvement they're looking for
The Addco rear bar is (as I recall) more like 19mm or 20mm. I would not recommend using it at all unless you have a 25mm front bar and even then I think it might be too much, to be honest.
No matter what size you end up with the car WILL behave differently. If you corner aggressively I recommend taking some time to experiment and gradually work up to higher speeds to get the feel of things.
Cheers

I am not sure what you are asking. If you want the Jaguar OEM ride/handling, and in my opinion it is unbeatable if you want a road car, then Boge are both the cheapest and the best, front and rear.
If you mean David Manners - who I find very helpful and decent guys - then yes, they do ship anywhere.

Advice and suggestions here have told me Boge and why. I trust it am going with that and am in the market. Front shocks are squeakerz at this point and rear hangs low.
When I saw the post above for Welsh and $299 I went to look and found the $500 cost. So I posted about the change. Frustrated. No biggie. Maybe I should have left the thread alone. But then, I read Dave Manners, found the page and sent them an email. Wish I had seen it sooner! Hope they take PayPal, lol
Anyways. All is good and the mission continues.
Thanks Greg...

Are the Sachs shocks not the same as the Boge? I just recently ordered the front Sachs 311-348 shocks for about $40/each, free shipping.
The Boge I installed (can't remember from where) are DEAD. They are done. I was grateful that I saved the OEM shocks. While not great, they are still in serviceable condition. I want to say the Boge were on the fronts for about 50,000 miles.

Sounds ok to me.

If the rear of the car is low, then the springs are weak, the shockers have no great effect on the matter. New springs not that dear though!

I hear ya. Thanks. I want to do them all. Shocks and rear springs... Should. The car sat for like 12yrs. If I push down on the back and front, the car bounces around. The front clearly squeaks some. With the prices at the group named above it's not too bad a hit... I'm excited to do it and by this car. Can't help it.

Nobody knows
The corporate parentage is the same but whether or not the parts are the same, I can't say. With so much global manufacturing and distributing, and constant changes of corporate ownership, it's hard to really know what you are buying. So much stuff is 'label engineered' these days
I've seen listings for "Boge" and the picture clearly shows a Sachs label, and vice-versa. I've seen packaging that says "Sachs-Boge". A lot of vendors seem to use the two brands names interchangeably.
Even 20 years ago the consensus (perhaps unfair?) was to avoid Boge shocks made in Turkey and to seek out those made in Germany
Cheers
