I have that and it's related to the hand brake - when the hand brake is engaged the light comes on when I push the brake. As my handbrake light was disconnected by a PO and the handbrake is inop it is the only sign I have when the car believes the handbrake is on. Handy for me as I have a vert and the car requires me to have it 'on' before I can operate the top mechanism.

Exactly.
This is how the system check the brake lamp bulbs.
Either the handbrake is applied or the system "thinks" it is applied due to a sticky/misadjusted/faulty handbrake switch
Cheers
