Hi V1rok

It was a 'Walk in the Park'

I just supported the weight of the Bonnet/Hood on a great big Bolster/Cushion/Poufee/Thingy.

And then removed both Bonnet/Hood Struts (completely)

Then threaded a thin but strong rope, through a couple of holes near the Bonnet/Hood Catch.

(with some padding where the rope goes over the lip of the Bonnet/Hood) to protect the Paint.

Then all I did was to Physically lift the Bonnet/Hood up in the Air, until it was about 15 degrees off Vertical, while the GF tied the rope to the nearest tree.

Obviously not on a Windy Day as if the Bonnet/Hood blows over, you will top yourself!

So maybe a beam inside/outside your 'Shop' would be much better.

The result is acres of space to work, so all you need now is grit, determination, piano players fingers or get 'Edward Sissorhands' over to help you.

Hi Warrjon

I never gave the Thickness of the Washers a Thought!

I thought they were all about the same and any ones would do

Although it seems that I got lucky, as She Cooling even better than She did before and doesn't appear to be leaking any Water.

Must be 'The Jaguar Gods' had come to my rescue.

But as for the 'Test Drive' That didn't go according to Plan and Full of incidents from Start to Finish!

Yeah! that's what I should have done but as I was in a hurry, I didn't want to waste more time considering other options.

Those Washers were the last piece of the Jig Saw, though I still find myself waking in the middle of the night, just thinking that I paid £6 for those!

That's almost enough to buy a gallon of Petrol

You guys are sometimes so hilarious! We ought to consider, that £6 for some washers is technically cheap. Buy them for an equally old S600 or an 850i. Have fun and don't get a heart attack. Even better, buy say a camber adjustment screw for a Volvo C30/S40/V50/C70. ONE screw costs around €90 plud VAT! And they are only about 7 cm long with an offcenter washer. Material value something like €0.30.

I am happy with the exceptionally cheap prices the XJ-S throw at me...

Hi Daim

Yeah! you are probably right as in the grand scheme of things £6 isn't much and in point of fact I've sorta made it up on the cost of the Fans.

I have now changed the Fan 3 Times and put on a New Clutch, all of which were gifted to me by some friends of ours.

But the Weather had been so awful, that when there was a window and the Sun began to Shine, I was feeling so overcome with Withdrawal Symptoms.

That I was having a 'Panic Attack' resulting in a desperation to get out of the house and back on the road for the 'Test Drive' that I was looking forward to so much.

Which certainly didn't go according to plan and still has us waking in the middle of the night, where instead of counting Sheep, we've laughed ourselves to Sleep.

That was one crazy day out!

we pay around £1.12 a litre. 1 litre is 0.213 imperial gallons. 1 imperial gallon is 1.2 US gallons approximately.

I have a hangover at the moment so I cant do the maths

CNG is crap in a car. Needs high pressure tanks etc. Best is LPG also known as Autogas. I use it myself.

Currently quite cheap... €1.28/l for 95 ron, about €1.32/for 98. I rarely tank petrol, as I am normally found infront of the LPG pump... That is not even half as much! €0.56/l... So I don't even look anymore. The €20 of E10 I stuff in the tank every 3 months doesn't hurt I'm saving for when the XJ-S is done... Then I'll be looking!

Default 'The Ice Princess'

Will The Next Contestant
Please Step Forward

Having now got 'Cherry Blossom' back on the road once more together with my Grey XJS which is called 50 Shades

I've now got another XJS to Restore, which is an Arctic Blue XJS called 'The Ice Princess'

That hasn't been on the Road since 2003 and has lots of problems that will need to be sorted, so hope that my experience restoring 'Cherry Blossom' will be useful.

Although I've got a Brand New ABS Valve Block which I picked up at an Auto Jumble for only £50! which will need to be fitted.

Since the whole unit is out of the Car, I am seriously thinking of going Non ABS with a Brake Booster.

Because I much prefer the very positive pedal feel, that seems to be lacking with the ABS Systems in both my other Cars.

What is more I may already have the Parts I need, as there is a complete Brake Booster System, in my Scrap Merc 190d that I may be able to use.

But then there could be a Problem, as the Merc had a Manual Box which means that this Brake Booster System has a pipe coming off it for the Clutch.

So wondering if I could just Block that off?

But then on the other side of the Coin, it does already have a Master Cylinder and that could probably save me around £200 (all in)

And I also have a Spare XJS Brake Pedal, so hoping with a bit (a lot) of modding, I could be in Business.

Non ABS in an XJS is something that I have always wanted to try and should I find that I don't like it, than I can easily put the ABS back in (I've had the practice!)

Ideas/Suggestions

'The Ice Princess' my 1990 Arctic Blue XJS

I do not want to be a wet blanket, but a bodged brake system is a very bad idea, especially when the jaguar parts are readily available at any scrapper. perhaps more important, changing a car's spec from the original, in something as fundamental as braking, would need the approval of your insurer before you started out on the job, I am pretty sure.

Hi Greg@Daim

I can see where you are coming from and there's no doubt you are both right but if I could find a Non ABS System.

That was in good condition, then I would like to fit it on the assumption my Insurance Company is OK with it.

As they say they don't mind mods as long as you ask them beforehand.

But since I have a complete New ABS System that I can drop straight in, then I suppose it would make much more sense to fit that and then get her back on the road.

First Job is put the Hub Back, fit a New Steering Arm and then put on a New set of Calipers.
