Default Cigar Lighter

I was hoping for an easy fix, but that was not the case. I located the fuse for the cigarette lighter under the passenger side glove box and it was fine. Also it is the same fuse for the radio and that works fine.

I took the lighter out and I need help with the 3 wires going to it. There is black ground, then a green wire going to the bottom of the cigarette lighter and a red wire that goes to a light.

Am I correct, that with the key turned to the ignition/run position, that a test light hooked to the ground should turn on when touched to the green wire and also light when touched to the red wire? Also, the green wire is the power to the lighter itself?

If this is the case, I am not getting any power. Any suggestions?

Yes you are correct you should have voltage at the green wire. A meter would be better for testing, what voltage is the light?

There is no voltage to the red light wire until the lights are turned on.

Be aware (in my case anyway) that the fuses in the ROM do not correspond with the fuses in the owners manual. Took me 2 hours to find the damn horn fuse.

Thanks for the info on the fuses - I never would have thought of them not corresponding. It wouldn't hurt to pull them all out and check anyway.

You only said the fuse was "fine". They can fail in less than obvious ways, so always check voltage on BOTH sides. If you have voltage going through the fuse but nothing on green then you have a problem between the 2 places. Make a continuity check at those locations if you have a meter to determine if it is a short or an open.
If your windows work then your relay is fine. The diagram indicates there is a connector between the relay and fuse and another between the fuse and lighter, those would also be places to check for voltage, working your way back from that first connector ( or fuse block if you have voltage there)

Thanks for the wiring diagram. After I got the ski slope off, it looks like someone was in there before and wired up power for an old cell phone or something in there. Looks like its taken care of now.

I don't have anything technical to add, but I must say it strikes me how much times have changed. Our cars are equipped with CIGAR lighters. Most cars of the era came with cigarette lighters. Never mind nowadays, there are only 'power outlets'.

Eh, the lighter is the same lighter as any other car. The ashtray is actually designed for a cigar, the lighter is as much a cigar lighter as the one on my 2000 Ford Taurus.

They are just used differently now. Cigarettes took preference over cigars long ago and most people don't even smoke anymore. That is why they are typically considered power outlets now. You can light with them but most people just want to charge their phones.

It makes for an interesting story as to why they are the standard size that exists today, originally had to be large enough to light a cigar...
