Default Click when brake pressed on 91 xjs

Hello,

I can hear a click sound from the passengers foot well when I press the brake pedal in my 91 xjs. Brakes work fine. Wondering if that is a common issue?

Thanks

My 89 does it, as well as briefly flickering the main BRAKE light, then the ABS light. Both go out immediately. It's done it ever since I got the car, almost 4 years ago now, and I haven't had any braking issues.

I do wonder how well my ABS works, though.

I think that the clicking is the interlock under the gearbox console which stops you taking it out of park unless your foot is on the brake.

I agree.

You should hear the click if the gearshift is in "P". Otherwise, silence

The X300s have a common problem with the "Not In Park" micro-switch. It defeats the circuit when the transmission is, you guessed it, not in "P".

I'm assuming the XJS has the same sort of thing....although I'm not familiar with the specifics. A check of the wiring diagrams should tell us

Cheers

I experience the brief flickering too.

I'm getting the click on my 89, but I have no shift interlock. I can freely shift in and out of park without my foot being on the brake. Same on my 87 XJ6 (but my XJ6 doesn't click).

That solenoid can be defeated... One of the previous owners did it to my car...

Perhaps an ABS relay clicking?

Cheers

I'm almost certain that's what it is in my case, given I get that brief Brake Warning/ABS Warning flash most times when I step on the pedal. I've just resigned myself to not counting on this car to have ABS to help me. Back when I still had my 88 XJ40, I never could get the ABS to work on it, either.

I always get the click, but I don't always get the light flash. I seem to get the light flash less when I'm in stop-and-go traffic and never get up to speed between braking incidents. But if I get up over 20 to 30 mph, it will flash pretty much every time.
